What's the best and safest way to clean up a used yixing I have just purchased? Was probably in use for several years...
I have been hearing people talking about lemon, soap, baking soda...all seem detrimental to me ... what do you guys are using?
How thoroughly do you want to clean it? Let's evaluate the state of the pot in detail... photos please
What I'd do:
boiling the pot in water water, maybe baking it the oven (be careful - use something to dampen the pot, so it doesn't crash into the cooking pot and gets damaged, bring up the temperature gradually, etc).
If you want to go further, there are other options. I'd only do that if absolutely necessary.
I'd start with the baking soda on a wet teapot. Works like magic with teastains and not detrimental at all. Few good rinses with hot water and one or two brewing sessions will wash out all the residual taste it can leave.
After it depends on how dirty it is.
Btw. soaking in bleach alone might not clean the pot, it might just "clean" the dirt on the pot (it can still be there but look clean). Some gentle scrubbing is still needed.
