Yixing
@Mark-S I don’t think speed should be your concern on an eBay auction... you need to have your maximum that this pot is worth to you and go for that. Getting something as cheap as possible is a recipe for just that, getting cheap pots in all the senses of the word.

By the way, I found an antique teapot auction catalog with decent resolution images that may serve as good references.
Apology if it has already been posted or an old news.

This is my 70s F1 three friends with Golfball filter. A precious gift from a very good friend. The clay is superb, very fine Zisha, rarely as nice on factory pots.

There are also some confirmed ones that are very ugly...

@pantry
I downloaded the pictures in the highest resolution and merged them to a pdf file. I also got a similar catalog I photocopied recently. If you are interested in the files you can send me a private message. I think it could be illegal to post them here.

@Mark-S
As I've mentioned earlier, there is no reason to suspect or conclude that your 3Friends Pot is a fake. But what @Bok, @Chadrinkincat and others have mentioned is even amongst Factory1 pots, there are some potters that are more experienced and skilled who are seniors, and there will also be apprentices that are just starting their journey aspiring to be a successful teapot artist. Hence, you will get the same design of varying levels of workmanship. Back in the days when these pots were produced, there was no price differentiation between them. But in modern days, a well made pot from the hands of an artist will cost a lot more than one from a junior artist. It all comes back to your criteria and preferences in buying a pot. No right or wrong. I have friends who intentionally and knowingly collect fake / replica pots that are so well made, they even fooled the eyes of experienced collectors.
Cheers!
@OCTO
Why do they do this? To learn the differences between the genuine and fake/replica teapots? Or just because they look good? But then you cannot be sure about the clay (if there are chemicals in it).I have friends who intentionally and knowingly collect fake / replica pots that are so well made, they even fooled the eyes of experienced collectors.
hahahaha..... which comes back to the question.... how do you classify a pot as fake?? There are many replicas out there which are made by senior artists who has access to quality Yixing clays. If the shape is a traditional shape.... almost every modern pot is a replica of the first pot! That's why the line is so so thin, it's as clear as how the individual buyer perceives it to be.Mark-S wrote: ↑Wed Apr 22, 2020 9:09 pmOCTO

Personally, I have a few fake pots, my definition of a fake Yixing pot is the use of clay outside Yixing, which is very rampant these days. Most of them kills the tea that they brew. I buy them for educational purposes.
Cheers!
