@Andrew S sounds like a great trip! Good point on these in shop tasting sessions. If you do the math those are good opportunities to taste otherwise unaffordable stuff to form a more educated opinion.

Quite common for higher end Yancha/Dancong in China.
In Taiwan usually tea sampling is free, although it might take some luck and longer relationships to get to try some premium stuff. Only ever heard of paid-sampling of a high level Oriental beauty shop and of course of samplings of rare old teas and some high profile event with supposedly Chen Ah Qiao made Dongding(which was in all likelihood fake nonetheless).

Looking forward to read your in-depth report!

@Andrew S, that sounds like a wonderful tea adventure! As someone who also doesn't speak Chinese, it's encouraging that you were able to communicate with vendors. I also look forward to hearing more about your finds in Taiwan.

starting today with some Yume no Ukihashi gyokuro from Tsuen tea via O-cha. I just love the routine and the calming and the focus from picking out today's infusion vessel (small pot by Petr Novák), teacup (yunomi from Yamane Seigan), and the graduated infusions from quite cool to near boiling.

From time to time I interrupt the sequence of sips of tea with sip of this morning's Hot Chocolate (chili, cinnamon, and nutmeg today) or a bite of walnut, or a cuddle with the cats.

The whole ritual feels like it should come with one of those very commercial voiceovers describing how their breakfast item is fortified with vitamins and minerals but instead fortified with theanine and theobromine and caffeine and purrs and oxytocin, to strengthen my heart for the day ahead. There are plenty of days when I have to cut it short with fewer larger infusions that makes the more relaxed starts all the lovelier.
