faj If all clear glazes had leachable lead that would certainly be a worldwide health issue.
At one point, paint and fuel were huge sources of exposure to lead. And it was not an issue, until it was. Lead being widely present in the environment due to pollution, it is difficult to evaluate the exposure level due to any specific source. This reduces the likelihood of further actions for sources of exposure that have lower average impact but may still have high impact for specific individuals.

Crystal glass is a known, legal way to add lead to your drinks, and studies have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to acidic liquids will provide you with quite a dose of lead. Strangely, manufactures of crystal items still seem to advertise on the basis that higher lead content means a more desirable product. Go figure.

There should be some governmental resources on the interwebs with more info on that.
That is what I thought, too. In the not-too-distant past, I tried to find information about this, but was not successful. I am no expert at locating that kind of information, though. All I found were anecdotal evidence of lead leaching from terra cotta items from Mexico, probably all referencing the same study to begin with.

About pottery, I found various mentions of the use of frits for glazes as something that made leaded glaze safer for workers using them at the manufacturing stage, but this has nothing to do with safety for the end-user.

Basically, all red glazed antique cups are very likely to leach lead, this style in particular almost 100%.
What about the brown glaze on those exported Bavaria tea cups? I suppose we can use a straw, and wear gloves when handling these toxic teacups 😂

Here's a good discussion on toxicity in ceramic glazes, with the most informative posts by JBaymore:

Apologies for the off-topic posts, I'll go back to drinking puer from my questionable vintage and antique teacups

I glanced through a document linked to in that thread (cited by JBaymore as well known in his trade). Here is a quote from it I find telling :
We have also seen many examples of successful action, although action usually has come much too late: Lead-free glazes in pottery [...]
Lead-free glazes being progress means leaded glazes were a problem to start with. I have no idea whether leaded glazes are still in use today. But I would hazard a guess that the last use to disappear would be in low-volume, handmade stuff that follows long-established traditions, under the radar of health authorities.

Sure enough, the stuff is not hard to find :

wave_code with regards to the 7581 bricks no matter what they say, are over cooked, anything post 90s anyways and even with cakes labelled as such it's best to try before committing. Time would help, air also... Break the brick up, air it out wrapped in kitchen paper somewhere dark and neutral smelling for a week or so and then pop the lot into a can or porcelain (I think clay works good for cooked stuff but it's a quirk) for a week a so and see what happens it's okay too to forget and go wow later on but it's fun...
ok, interesting. this is an '05, and yeah it did seem quite dark in the leaf and while there was nothing unpleasant about it its as though anything distinctive had been cooked out of it. like flakey broken up Golden Sail orange box has a more distinctive taste to me. its not like it has any funky storage or anything - in fact I think if it did it would have made it more interesting. but maybe I'll see if getting it some airflow will help. maybe it also needs some more moisture to wake up a bit.

I had some lovely puerh from Youle that had a strawberry jam like aftertaste. On another note, I saw a video on puerh, this lady took a knife to the puerh cake and ground up bits for her tea session. I cringed and I could hear the puerh cake crying out for justice. Ooof!!

After reading @Baisao mentioning of 40 y/o Shu Puerh causing "calming narcotic" effect (viewtopic.php?f=63&t=1703&start=36), I searched for the oldest shu available for purchase on the web. The closest thing I found was a 1980s Shu loose leaf Puerh named "Bindbole" sold by Global Tea Hut. Wow! this stuff is good. I really like the "aerial fermentaion" Shu from Denong tea house but those teas are no where near the quality of this tea. This tea alone made up for the bad aged Lishan Oolong named "Cloud Freedom" sold by them.

Bindbole is earthy, spicy, sweet, ginsenglike and above all CLEAN! Instead of the deep dark black color, it was more reddish...most likely because it was partially fermented. Yes it has a calming Qi but not narcotic like...never had a high from Narcotic so I cannot relate here :)

Say what you want to say about GTH spiritual aspects, but their teas are definitely good. I bought 4 teas from them and 3 out of 4 were spectacular. Moreover, the more I read their magazines and watch their videos the more I like their inclination toward the spiritual side of tea drinking. As I am a big fan of Wistaria tea house, I am now a big fan of Global Tea Hut.

@StoneLadle I have plans to brew up some Aged Sheng later. I'll snap some pics of that Red Label cake for you. Sorry about the delay.

I concur, I really enjoy Bindbole as well! Great choice!! GTH has some solid offerings, no doubt. I have been very pleased with the vast collection of teas I have purchased from them.

For the last 10 years, any scraps from cutting into a cake goes into a paper sandwich bag that I call my house blend, and every so often I'd brew some up if I was feeling zesty. At the beginning I was drinking a lot more young sheng, so it's been interesting to see how the loose leaf has changed and aged over time. It's been a while since I've tried my house blend, and now it's starting to taste mid-aged. Can't wait to see where this goes from here.

2008 Mengla Old Tree Sheng.

~ 12g’s in 280ml DCQ. DCQ FTW 🥇 🏆

Gumdrop aroma 🍬

Flavors are crisp, clean, and sweet. Herbaceous and earthy 🍂 🍂 🍂

Strength is a deceptive, creeping high. Calming, alert, and mildly psychedelic 🤩

A lovely Fall-time sipper 🍁

Party time 🎈 🥳 🎈
