2005 Bulang double lion (from TWL)
15 year old Malaysian stored tea, still with some power. I cant imagine how this tasted young.

Good body, some nice sweetness. Not much in terms of storage notes. A little bit of smoke, but not much. An aspirin-like bitterness in steeps 3-8ish, but not unpleasant to me. I kind of like a little bitterness, it seems to add body and fill out complexity.

I'm starting to get tuned into chi (maybe). In the first few infusions, I get this feeling around my temples, behind my eyes and radiating on the top of my arms. Then, I get a flushing warmness on my skin. It is certainly stimulating, but not a super cheery type, it has a bit of evilness to it. I like it. It's like dark music or art. Not unpleasant at all, but not a super bright, joyful feeling like some other teas give. Maybe I'm reaching here, but just trying to open myself up to a new way of thinking about tea. It's fun.

It has good longevity to it. I cant count steeps, but my 100mL teapot holds about 50mL of water when I have 8g of tea stuffed in there. I use almost all of 1.5L of water (2 rinses and a preheat ~200mL). I'm guessing about 20 steeps.

As a big fan of both Bulang teas and Malaysian storage, I've been drooling over that cake for quite some time...

I like the cake too but for a different reason. It it the sweetest puerh tea I've ever tasted. More so than any other Yiwu teas from Wistaria or YQH. However, it has the most smoke in all my puerh cakes. I can still smell and taste the smoke at my last (9th) infusion. The Qi was not that strong for me. I find the Bulang King cake (also sold by Teas we Like) has more punch.

The compression was really hard in the center. I think it created a blunt end on my steel puer knife :)

The other thing I notice is the leaves and stems are very small. Not sure if this is a small leaf variety or if it's really picking of young tea leaves. Does anyone know if Bulang area has small leaf tea tree?

Mine is really compressed also.
When did you get yours? I'm wondering if mine had any more time in Malaysia.

I definitely get a lot of sweetness, but not so much on the smoke. I have a 95 Menghai that tastes like a fireplace on the first 4 infusions.

My first love in tea was Taiwan oolongs so any raw puerh that is fruity/floral with some astringency and complexity is a buy.

2005 Bulang double lion, since you were talking about it :D.

Very prominent qi for me. Almost as if I close my eyes, I would be deep in a meditation session. I brewed in a gaiwan and got quite a bit of the Malaysian storage. It smelled musty and tasted musty at first. After a couple steeps, it opened up to a jujube note still with a lingering bitterness. The bitter blends very well with the jujube. I didnt get a long finish. Huigan was present but not overpowering.

Transferred the leaves to the clay pot around the 10th infusion. I now get more of the finish. The tea becomes sweet, similar to the sweetness in jujube. Huigan lingers longer.

Overall, this tea is quite powerful and can be aged for longer. Im excited to try this tea years down the line!

XG T8653-5 thick paper. Needed a bit of a kick this morning to get focused. Good now but needs some more age, I'd love to see what this will taste like with another 3-4 years of hotter storage.

2013 Yi Dian Hong. Third new shou in a week or so. Unfortunately, all three of them have been rather meh. Going to have to go back to a tried and true this afternoon to make sure I'm not losing my appreciation for shou.

I sometimes lose appreciation for a type of tea. Usually comes back but not always. I recently stock-piled on Sheng and Shou so let’s hope I don’t have that meh experience. Good thing you can age them and try again later on though
