Is this a F1 set? Why do they spend so much money (about $1400) for this set? I found a similar F1 teapot twice for about $200 on eBay. Is it because it's a complete set? But other F1 sets are not that expensive.

Based on the photos on the site and description given, it's a 50s papaya set and it's a COMPLETE set, which is rare. I will happily part with $1400 for this set. The price is pretty decent for a complete set from the 50s. My only concern is, I have reservations about buying such pots online. I will prefer to hold them in my hands and assess them or have a trusted buyer do it on my behalf before I add another dent to my pocket.

On why the same pot is found for $200? The sad fact is, we often find mediocre and low grade teapots on eBay. At this price range, there's always something that's not right. Though the design and shape may look the same, details such as clay quality, workmanship, stroke and attention to details are totally different. Even amongst F1 pots, you will find lemons. A lot more Lemons online than sweet Oranges... hahaha.... Even a black label Sunkist cost differently from a blue label Sunkist. Same farm, same soil, same source...

Cheers!!
Thanks for chiming In. I was thinking that this one seemed similar to that 50’s version you posted awhile back.

As for the $200 similar version that Mars-s has seen, it’s because those one are late 70-80’s F1 and often have chips or missing plates. I’ve never seen set like this papaya one sell for below $1000

Looks to be a complete set in good condition. The era obviously effects price so maybe this one is CR or earlier. I think OCTO has a few of these from 50-70’s
@Chadrinkincat, yes I have some, but not this papaya set.... hahaha..... You are correct. This set is from the 50s/60s era.

Cheers!

@Chadrinkincat
I'll compare it to similar pots from the Facebook page now. Maybe, just my product photography skills suck. I took multiple pictures and the lid looked different on every picture. :lol:

@OCTO @Chadrinkincat
Thanks for the information. Yes, I think the teapots I found were from the green label era (and made of different clay) but without any flaws. The price was good, but I don't like the shape that much.

@OCTO

I saw this 3 friends pot awhile back which also looked 50’s to me. Came w/ round base seal that is in Dr. Lu’s book.

Price?
No idea but it was sold privately or taken down. Every set like this I’ve seen sells for $1000-2500

I own a 3 friends pot with multiple cups, but it's from the 70s or 80s... I think. $1000-2500 is definitely too expensive for me. So I'll better stick with my "not as good" green label pots. ;)

I will stay far far away from this set... hahahaha... if you know what I mean.... The earliest I've seen are in the 60s. What's worth looking for is a 3Friend with golfball filter from the 70s era. They don't come by very often.

Cheers!

8-)

Do you own one of these?

That's my 3 friend pot. Not sure about the authenticity. I have not had the time to compare it to genuine ones yet.

I surrender. There are similar teapots (F1 and not F1) in the Facebook group, but not a single pot where all details match.
This teapot comes close to mine, but it has a single hole filter, and the lid does not look the same. And the craftsmanship on my pot is better (in my opinion!! :lol: ).
All sets look different. Good chance that you are right. Whatever. I'll keep it. It's nice.

So, this is what Xu Yue Feng tells me about the “Da Hong Pao” clay used in his teapots, via Gao/Yinchen:

20+ years ago, Master Xu experimented with sorting out the highest grades of each main variety of zhuni (Zhao Zhuang, Xiao Mei Yao, and Huang Long Shan). He found that the refined HLS was the best at retaining aromatics and high notes. It also had the highest iron content and the greatest shrinkage rate of the three refined varieties. Thus, he chose the refined HLS to be his “Da Hong Pao” clay. He works with ZZ and XMY zhuni as well, but they are both priced lower than the HLS-derived Da Hong Pao.

Gao tells me HLS zhuni is rarer than the other two, for what it’s worth.

I have seen Steanze post favorably about his XMY zhuni teapot from Master Xu. Maybe if he’s around, he can comment about all of the above.
