Chaozhou/Shantou
My Chaozhou teapot. My friend says it is around 100 years old, but I am not sure. What do you think please?

My latest Chaozhou pot. This one is a real beauty, very finely executed and in prime condition. I just love the elegant, yet very simple shape! Looking forward to brew some Dancong in it. Don't ask me about the period though, I have no clue!
One good friend suggests it to be likely 90s-2000s, the other estimates Late Qing/ROC – quite the stretch! In the end it matters only marginally, I bought it for the looks
It's 80ml and seems to have multiple coatings of read clay as usual for better quality CZ for a more refined finish.

Hi everyone,
I have zero experience with chaozhou pot aside from reading about them online and watching videos on how they are made. It seems chaozhou pots typically come in a red color. Do other colors exist within chaozhou pots?

Basically, Chaozhou clay only comes in orange colour you see on the inside and brown . The coating I have seen in red and rarely, in dark brown.
Edit: A friend corrected me just now, that there seems to be brown as well, which I was not aware of...
The wholly red CZ pots you see today, have been artificially doped with iron to become totally red...

Thanks for you and your friend’s feedback. I have never used chaozhou pots before, Reaources are not as popular as zisha, I think it’s worth learning since chaozhou has a rich tea history.

I am considering a Chaozhou pot for Dan Congs and have started to look around online.
I really like the ones sold at Mei Leaf, but I wonder if I can get similar quality at a lower price somewhere else. I also looked at the ones at The Chinese Tea Company, but the shapes I prefer are sold out.
Any recommended vendors or anybody wanting to sell one? Thanks!

We had a lengthy discussion about Meileaf a while back, might be worth to dig it out.
Tea habitat is the other vendor of CZ that comes to mind and with a better reputation... consider this: as far as I am aware the modern Chaozhou clay is difficult to find in its pure form and that is the one doing really well with Dancong. I got a modern one in that clay from Taobao a while back, you can see it up in the discussion.
Look for clay that is dark orange, not red. If red it should only be the outside as is the case with vintage CZ pots. Anything too red is possible tainted and or not original CZ clay, this defeating the purpose of buying it.
Vintage CZ pop up frequently, but often mislabelled as Yixing, so keep an eye open! Can be very expensive or very cheap! I got a late Qing for five bucks but have also seen one selling at 2000 so... the range is huge and information is very scarce.

I got mine in 2019 from Yunnan Sourcing. I’m not an expert but I love mine. I’ve used for Dan Cong and young Sheng. It slightly mellows the Dan Cong compared to a Gaiwan, but it tastes very balanced to me (a hard to brew tea where the pot seems to help, me at least). Feels so good in my hand, tight lid and pours quickly and without dribble.

First off the cuff thought, by the way: it seems to me that Don Mei's opinions about the difference between Chaozhou and Yixing were not meant as umbrella statements about the two clays. I think he was very specifically contrasting the Zini Xi Shi pot and the Master Wu ones that he sells. My take was that it was meant as a very context-specific opinion (as everything with Yixing and clays in general) rather than as an absolute one.
But yeah, will be wary of overly red pots.
