Beautiful pieces and great prices I’ve never seen a Hokujo cup with saucer that size, nice.
Thank you! It's a lovely cup, just a little too classy and refined for me. I'm really jiving on shino and wood fired stuff right now. And I always make an exception for painted porcelain.
Looking good. I have an older Gafu reduction pot made in a similar style to yours; super light, great pour and perfect lid fit makes it one of my most used pots. Also I just love the suction effect when you put the lid back on when the pots wet
Tokoname shudei clay kyusu are generally denser and less porous than Shigaraki and Iga clays. The overall effect is closer to neutral for Japanese greens and oolong in my experience. The differences are more noticeable when mineral aggregates are added to the clay, like with pear skin shudei, making the kyusu slightly more porous. Although, even within finely grained Tokoname shudei clays differences can be noticed, just much more subtle. I would say Gafu’s shudei would be closer to neutral, but this is just from appearance. Even within a potters work that spans decades there will be subtle differences. I find those nuances are subtly felt and experienced more so due to differences in shape, wall thickness, and mineral aggregates added. The aesthetic attraction you feel towards a piece is probably more important towards having an effect on the tea. It’s more about a synthesis of nuances, than a clear technical effect for me.
I think Victoria nailed it in saying that it has a mostly neutral effect on green tea. The only thing I would really add is that Gafu's reduction shudei is really able to bring out a lot of the aroma that my other pots don't seem to be able to pull out. I'm not sure if this has to do with the reduction firing, thinness of the pot(my 230ml kyusu is only about 126g's) or shape, but it works better than any other pot I have for when I want to bring out more aromatics. I actually used it earlier today with a yabukita sencha from Honyama, and I was able to bring out some distinctly high-mountain fruitier notes that I would only normally associate with Taiwanese high-mountain teas . When I switched to a glazed pot and tried brewing it again, I got instead a lot of more distinctly vegetal notes, despite using the same time/temp/and amount of tea. I'm not sure if that matches anyone else's experiences with reduction shudei but like Victoria said, taste-wise it definitely leans toward the more neutral side of things for sure.
Its pretty amazing, the lid almost clicks into place!
I can't really speak about any affects the shudei has on tea. It doesn't remove anything, I can say that for sure. But I am not a connoisseur with a sensitive palate. I agree with Victoria though about the aesthetic attraction though. The Gafu has a lovely smooth finish, 2nd only to my previously owned Gisui when it comes to just interacting with the pot. Its lovely to just hold and feel the ridges on the smooth clay.
