Thank you so much for the advice! The rust is gone, with a nice blackened seal in its place. I didn't have any cheap tea at home, so I had to sacrifice to sacrifice a bit of Dan Cong. Well worth it, though.

Oh that’s great to hear. How long did you cook with tea?

I boiled/simmered it for half an hour, then let it rest for four hours or so. I boiled fresh water in the tetsubin four times and there it was, good as new.
Now I'm wondering about the first tea drinker who discovered this method, seeing the rust inside and going "screw it, I'm gonna have my tea anyway".

It took me a couple of years, but i finally managed to find a second chagama that i fancy.

Hope you enjoy. Maker is Seiko Sato. Herons and what i assume to be pine-cones (or maybe armadillos :D ).

That is a lovely, subtle design. Quite a marvelous thing to have at the tea table.

My second only Tetsubin. Again something I bought used and of unknown age. It was a fair bit more rusty than my first, but I had my cleaning routine sorted out better this time, so it seemed quite easy to clean...

It has an interesting design, what looks like broken and rusted out is actually purposely done so.

In the close ups you can see that the things on the side are to represent reefs and it has a turtle on each side swimming though them... :)
