i'm noticing that many of you have reset your passwords over the last couple days...

just because the site rarely logs you out doesn't mean that it will never happen. remember those passwords, friends! ;)
(but you can always reset your pw if you really do forget)

That just mean that the recipient hasn't read them yet. Confusing, but that is how this system works :D

I'm noticing that post-reply windows now automatically seem to have 'notify me when a reply is posted' checked automatically. I do not like having another set of e-mails to delete--the little bell upper right when I login is all the notice I need as I check the forum often.

Is there a setting in my profile I might accidentally have toggled that changed this behavior in the last couple of days?

You can control notifications in your User Control Panel, upper right of page under your name/User Control Panel/Board Preferences/ Edit notification options.

how would you all characterize the performance of the built in search?

i ask because i don't use it often, but when i tried to use it recently, i thought it was unbelievably slow.
i had some free time tonight to take a look at it, but now it's working fine for me. i can't reproduce the issue i had before.

please share your experiences with using it. if possible, share exactly what you searched for and when.

@pedant, i have used search now and then and haven't noticed any sluggishness. Won't tell exactly, but i've been looking up on some clay types a while back and odd lookups on teas or producers and it's been pretty satisfying experience.

Funny you would say that... I use the search function quite often, and I did find it very slow. However, I was surprised at how very quickly it returned results recently, thinking something had changed, like some form of better indexing being used or the data being moved so SSD or cached in memory. Everything I try for now works fast (instantly, really) whereas in the past it would have taken, I don't know, maybe 10-20 seconds?

Yeah works practically instantly for me too. Maybe you just got unlucky with index just dropped out of cache or someting.

My only issue with search is the same that I have with so many search designs: not enough flexibility for a true boolean search.

It generally does what I ask it quite well. But I'd love to be able to search for (made up example)

[(puerh or pu-erh) + (YS or Yunnan) - (EOT OR essence) + post_by/debunix ]

to pull up an old post about a puerh I bought from Yunnan Sourcing, without getting a series of posts I wrote in a topic that was comparing a tea from YS to EOT, regardless of how I spelled/abbreviated the terms.

It's rarely a problem on a small forum like ours, but a huge PITA on bigger sites, where signal to noise ratios are so often very very low.

I've sent another member a message, but the message does not leave the outbox. What's the reason for this?

It doesn't leve the outbox until the recipient actually opens the message. I was confused by this too :)

Yes, correct until message is read it remains in outbox. I still have many unread messages :) .
