... yes! Went to Keelung harbour north of Taipei to see a place for a project, an old group of tiny houses formerly inhabited by the Highest harbour official when it was still Japanese. A rund down 100 year old Japanese style house on a rock in the bay. And in the garden what I was told was a 100year old tea tree!

No information on what kind, but as it dates from Japanese times maybe an Assam plant.

Beautiful story thanks for sharing. Occupation of Taiwan through the centuries is a fascinating and long story. Since the house is of a Japanese official it makes sense that the tree would be Assamica varietal. The Japanese not wanting Taiwan to compete with their own green tea export brought Assam plants to Taiwan and intentionally increased production of black teas there. One evolution of the occupation was that delicious hybrid teas were developed like Formosa Black and Ruby 18. Ruby 18 is one of my favorite black teas at the moment.
