Tea Books

This is something I’ve been keeping for a while. I recently thought to compile/organize/post it online for other people.

Not included: books focusing on tisanes, tea recipe books, books not in English (because I only speak the one language, I’m definitely not an authority on others). I figured most wouldn’t be interested in recipe books (I’m not), so I avoided doing the extra work.

Update 2023: Ended up moving 'Green Tea and Milk' to a new section on America, after having read it. It could go in either America or Japan, as it's focus is more on Japan's trade arrangements with America, and how America's tea tastes changed over the years. Up for debate.
Update 2021: More additions. Added to 2021 releases, and started 2022 releases. Broke out a 'Children's Books' section. Also working on breaking out a 'teaware' section, as well as add in the books people have suggested...
Update 2020: I finally caved and broke out a 'blending' section for books I found focused on true-tea blending. Guides that provide a section on blending are still placed under 'Guides'.

Disclaimers and unavoidable problems: I haven’t read every book on this list, so I don’t always know if they’re in exactly the right category. Plus many books fit in multiple categories. Some have misleading names. I ended up putting emphasis on books on specific countries; that is, those on specific aspects of a single country (ex. Chinese tea economy) went under China instead of Economy.

There were also a lot of problems with Japanese and Chinese authors (whether the publisher followed Western or Eastern conventions of surnames; some I had to guess). Also an entire collection of books on Tea Clippers which I couldn’t decide if I wanted to include, just because they’re cool, but only tangentially related to tea.

Future plans include: Adding peer-reviewed journals, and links to archive.org/Gutenberg for public domain works. I’ll likely devise a legend later to quickly mark country-specific books that have a focus (E: Economy, H: History, Cu: Culture, Ce: Ceremony…).

New Releases
Books posted here are also sorted in the master list below. I avoided reprints/reprints of public domain books, of which there are always a bunch, but included updated editions of existing works. Included updated volumes of existing books.

Handbooks/Guides
An interesting problem here: Is how do you separate books that have detailed dictionaries by tea type as WELL as comprehensive guides, and those that JUST have guides, and those guides that follow brewing, or production, or both?

General or Global History
I’m putting a disclaimer here because many books toting “the history of tea” end up being Britain-centric. I haven’t read all of them to confirm their placement.

General Culture
Most culture books are organized under their country. Some books cover multiple countries though, and those are listed here.
  • Bohne, H. European Tea Culture and Hospitality
  • Machester, C. Tea in the East
Economy/Industry/Consumerism
There’s a bit of overlap with the Botony/Growing/Production section with books that focused on both. This includes guides to the industry, the history of the tea industry, wholesale buyer's guides and guides on shops. Books on the Economy of specific countries are instead listed under their country section below.

Botany, Tea Growing/Cultivation/Production/Manufacture/Chemistry/Science
These ended up lumped together because a number of books overlapped. If the list becomes larger, I might break it up as best I can into Growing and Manufacture, Science, etcetera.

Thanks, it makes me consider pulling out the other two-ish books on teaware and making a new section rather than grouping them under their country.

The encyclopedia's translation was being posted to Teachat, iir. I wonder if there were any plans to release the full book in English.

Yes it is being translated. A new Teaware section is a good idea 💡

Thanks for the support; I've added a couple more China-specific English publications that were apparently written by the curator (Wang Jianrong) of, and specifically for, the China National Tea Museum (although I can't 100% confirm; just based on the synopsis I found with some of the books):
  • Wang, J. & Guo, D. All About Tea in China
  • Wang, J. & Guo, D. Illustrated Book of Chinese Tea
  • Wang, J. Illustrated Dictionary of Famous Tea in China
  • Zhou, W. and Yue, S. Pictorial Album of Chinese Tea Art
There's a few more I'm trying to sort through...

Would be interested to see things on tea science from a chemistry, rather than agricultural, perspective.

Media/ News, Publications & Research/ Research Corner: Interesting Journal Articles is meant to cover that area.

scientific tea books can go here though. Research Corner is more for journal articles.

I’m just about finished The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, a historical fiction novel with decent information about Puerh...but a great book imho even if not centered around tea. I searched for this here, wondering if it had been mentioned, perhaps in a thread about tea books, and I didn’t see anything. So I’ve started this thread about tea books. Please post your recommendations here!

Quite a few people have mentioned this book, but since I don't keep a Fiction section (there are a lot, of various levels of Help, so I tried to cull things and keep it on Reference Material only... I have a hard enough time keeping up with Tea Cook Books and the like).

I think you might be best making a topic about fiction recomendations, rather than having people post them here.

@Victoria
I assume the original text is in Chinese, wondering if you can share the title with me :)
