I have got a question regarding vintage/old Chinese porcelain: What do you look for when buying porcelain?

For example, I have seen a teapot on Chadrinkincat's Instagram page. He wrote that this would be a pre-CR teapot. This style is very common in Germany and does not seem to be linked to a specific period. How to determine the right age?

I just looked at his instagram to see why he would think it was pre-CR. It COULD be, but it its still post-49, at least until the 60s (CR starting in '66). The stamp on it, shows that already all the smaller producers have been collectivized.

BTW. I'm not sure about others, but I worry about any teaware that uses over glazed enamels. I'm afraid of something leeching into the tea.
This is why I believe that this pot is pre-CR. These are not the only 2 sources I’ve come across that suggest this seal is from this era. Is there a more accurate term for 1950-1965?

Does anybody know what these Japanese (?) characters mean? I could not find anything online.

I don’t think this plate is Chinese... this kind of pattern does not look like it’s from that region at all and the colours as well do not fit.

@Bok

Why do you think it's not Chinese? The colors could be a bit distorted. My smartphone camera is not very good.

I wonder if this style of plate was designed for exports?

@DailyTX

I buy most of my stuff in Germany or from the UK. This one is from the UK. The seller (not private this time) claimed it would be Chinese and from the 1890s. The second plate is from another seller from Germany.

Pattern doesn’t look typical Chinese, might be export. And if you look at the other picture you just posted it’s a lazy re draw of the same pattern. Colours look to bright to be old.

Ok, thanks. I think it's an export item then. The picture from Instagram I just shared because it's a similar pattern, and a Chinese guy posted it. :lol: I did not find another similar pattern online.

What do you think of the second plate?

The crackled glaze looks interesting...the word 福 at the center was written very sloppy. Maybe commoner’s kitchen ware?

Second one looks more interesting. I’d post it on the porcelain forum, more experts on there for this kind of items.

Okay, thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, the registration process fails. I tried it multiple times, and I only get this error message: "An Error Has Occurred!"

I'll wait a couple of days, and if it's still broken I will contact the admin...

The first one I assumed might be Japanese. That's definitely not a Chinese pattern I've seen before.

The second one looks like it is Chinese, but I've never seen that particular pattern before either. Could be pretty old though.
