Another thing you can try is use some rice water to further boil.

If that doesn’t help, maybe there is something wrong with it... it’s a mass produced kettle, so you never know.

It was perfectly fine before I scrubbed it down and boiled tea leaves in it so I'm hoping a few more boils will solve this. Thanks for the advice!

Using lid is fine, just not when drying
Actually, my teacher might have said to leave it out for 2-3 days (I don't remember if the advice was for the kettle or something else), but 24hr works for me so far. Anyway, good luck!

I ended up softly scrubbing the insides of my tetsubin with a soft sponge and then boiling some (cheap) gyokuro in it for about 5 minutes. The water turned purple and the rust blackened. However, I've boiled 3 pots of clean water in my testubin after and the water that comes out is still kind of brown... The rust has also deblackened and is back to red/brown. Any ideas on what to do?

Water turned purple ?? That sounds like a chemical reaction to me. I've boiled some tetsubin and have never some across one that turns boiled tea purple. At best it turns blackish after the rusts comes off while boiling tea. I have recently serviced my tetsubin and boiled some left over LongJing from last year which I forgot to finish. I always put it on a slow boil for about 30 minutes over the stove.

Rust is to be expected in any tetsubin.. more so if it's uncoated. As long as the water boiled is crystal clear, I would ignore the rusts. Firstly, have you checked is the water source giving you crystal clear water? If yes, keep boiling until you get crystal clear water.... u might need to repeat 10 or 20 times... If you can't accept the sight of rust, I strongly suggest you steer away from using a tetsubin so that your heart can be at peace. What worries me more is the discolouration of your tea boiled inside the tetsubin and the matter and pattern the rust appeared inside your tetsubin.

Update: I reboiled my tetsubin with green tea again but this time I left the boiled tea inside the tetsubin until the entire thing cooled down. I dumped the tea/tea leaves out (tea was black this time), rinsed it out, and then boiled some clean water. Water came out clear. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Inside and underside looks very good, maybe even unused. Size might be on small side, although it’s hard to tell from the pictures. Take into consideration that when heating up water inside you only want to fill 3/4 maximum.

There are some small rust spots inside, and the texture is rough like a really toothy paper or fabric. Could it have been scraped? Or is that the normal texture.

The size is roughly 1L, give or take 250mL. The base measures about 5 in for reference.

Also the makers mark seems to be Iwachu Nambu?

I'd say get it. As I was looking into enameled tetsubins recently and as it was mentioned here Iwachu is the main company that made/makes the GOOD quality enameled tetsubins and they also make other very nice cast iron cookware. the cheapest normal (meaning non-mini and non-enameled) tetsubins I've seen from them cost at least double that for very simple designs, so looks like a good deal to me!
