the lid was polished, and it made me think that there’s almost no way it’s a Jozan iii.
Polishing is more linked to the style I think, you wouldn't polish a rough surface, would you?
Not to forget that all of them in their younger years copied styles of their elders. But from my limited experience I would also not lean towards Jozan III, but II. For this kind of style it is almost always the most likely one.

My 150ml Jozan iii kyusu has a really legible signature, and it seemed fitting to post it here.

It’s a really nice kyusu, definitely the thinnest one I own; I even need to be careful holding down the lid when pouring so I don’t burn my finger.

Very nice kyusu!

Agreed, nice kyusu. I would like to eventually add one of his "rustic style" shudei pots like that to my collection.
Regarding the signature, you may notice "三代" (sandai / 3rd gen) is used inconsistently. He generally dropped it from his signature after age ~50.

Ah! That’s why it looks a bit atypical for Yamada, it’s an early period work of him, not yet in the signature styles.

From what I've seen for sale and in an exhibion book of his, it's not an uncommon style for him. I call 'em rustic style. He also made them later in life.
An example of what I have in my head as this style:

Will try to post others later when I'm not on this infernal smartphone.

@pedant I can see the resemblance, yet I'd say that yours is immediately recognisable as Yamada family, while the former is still a little less elegant in the minute details of the proportions and how everything comes together. You can see the maturity in the later version of it. Especially obvious at the spout and the handle.
The spout of the first pot is still more reminiscent of Jozan I and II in style.

I see what you're saying, but what about this one made later than either of those pots?

Kind of a blend.

Mmh to my eyes still a more balanced than the first one and also instantly a Yamada.

Here’s the stamp for a very special Hamajiro kyusu. Posting here since it can be hard to find good examples of Jozan l, it’s engraved by both Sekisen(石仙) and Tozan(陶山)
Nice pot and nice engravings! I thought engravings were more common for Jozan II. Stamp looks exactly the same as on my suspected Jozan I pot.

While there aren’t too many examples floating around, it’s not too uncommon for his work to be engraved by Tozan - considering that he’s Jozan 1’s younger brother it makes sense he’d be available for inscription work.
I also really love the lid design on your teapot! The smooth circle top reminds me of some modern Korean ceramics.
