Here's a cup i picked up from Artistic nippon last week. Quite the unusual colored hagi by Eiichi Shibuya.. Quite rough glazing too with some scratches from what i would assume to be the wood firing and very unusual crazing even on the matte blacks (i'll see if i can get that with phone camera and then see if i can get it of my phone ).

You mean Shibuya Eiichi, his grandson.

Vintage Hagi-ware shibo that I use for sencha more than any of my other Japanese teaware! Perfect for one cup sessions.

You're correct. Mistakenly said Deishi but should be Eiichi (edited now).

Finally managed to make some photo's The crackles are quite subdued - hard to get on photo, that's why they're pretty shiny.

It’s been an awesome year in teaware for me. Got my very first Hagi last week!

One question I have regarding care. I read that because they are porous, you should a) soak them for like an hour in water before use, and b) make sure to dry them really well or they will mold. Some sites also suggested that not soaking before use would also cause mold. Is the soak truly necessary? Do all y’all soak your hagis? Second, how dry is dry enough? Is a quick rinse with water and a quick dry with a paper towel good enough?

Giving my Hagi lots of tea cause it’s a leaker. Looking forward to seeing that close up a bit.

I have lost some delicate Hagi pieces to cracking and am not sure if that is because I was not careful enough with them; I think one of them was damaged by how it was stored; and others that are just fine with routine use and no special treatment. It may be that only the fittest Hagi survive my use.

The survival of the hagis, lol. You know you're into teaware when you're perfectly fine with your cup leaking a bit and cracking and consider that not only normal, but part of the charm. I have not mentioned it to my family. They would not understand.

I would add, leaking a bit, ok.. eventually cracking not ok.

cracking crackles/crazing/collecting tea in little crackles, like I see in the other pictures.
It isn't doing it any more than some of the others I've seen in this thread, and less than some. So normal hagi behavior, nothing scary, as far as I can tell. Seems sturdy enough.
