ash from burned shell/needles of urchin for glaze

Saw on Japanese tv in English that someone thought of a use for the unused part of uni. It seems that the ash from this waste as part of mixtures for glaze has likeable effects for the color & texture for ceramics. I was reminded that the same glaze can be a light color on some clays & dark on other clays. Next I hope for even less waste by good use of the heat (energy) of the burning.
