While looking for reviews of the book, to see if I wanted to pay $45+ for a used copy, I found some in stock at a ceramics supply company. On sale to boot! I wanted my copy to be delivered to make sure everything was correct before I posted about it, It’s new, but you can tell its NOS and has been on the shelf for awhile. The cover has some wear, but hey it was only $25 with shipping!

It gets good reviews. I am enjoying it so far. The only bad review on Amazon is that it doesn’t cover more modern artistic pieces. It’s definitely more of a history book/general overview of specific kilns styles which is what I wanted. Lots of beautiful photos from the authors collection.

That sounds great. There’s a paucity of information published in English.

I’ve seen parts of this book inside occasionally online. it looked like a very good resource and seems to include serious ceramic pieces that were more interesting than the cover suggests, so I just when ahead and got a copy. Shipping was as much as the book :) still very reasonable. I’ll share table of context etc once I receive a copy. Thanks for heads up @Darbotek 🍃

It’s quite nice, I’ll post some additional detail in my reply to Victoria. I don’t retain info i read on a screen so well, I just don’t like reading much on a screen, so I really wanted a book. Decided to pick this up before I dropped $100 on The Heritage of Japanese Ceramics.

I swear I saw you refer to the book once! That’s one of the reasons I picked it up. I will say its not SUPER in depth. Smaller kilns will get maybe half a page of history and technique. The big kilns get a couple of pages. I’d say its about half photos, but they are great photos, with helpful captions explaining the techniques and glazes used.

Shipping was kind of silly, but the cheapest copy I saw on the used market was $35 and that came with water stains, so I was ok with paying it. Here’s the table of contents and one of my favorite pieces I’ve seen so far.

After my order, i got called by the owner. They were concerned that it was some kind of order fraud because this book had not moved for a long time and then in one day, they got 3 orders to different parts of the country.

Interesting to see an older 2001 work by Watanabe tozo.

Below is an even older tozo from the 80s

Same. And concern because I used a VPN outside of the country. I almost directed her to some op-eds on Ajit Pai.

I received the book today and it is quite nice. Lots of photos and detailed information. The index numbering and listings has been off in a few places but with some knowledge it’s easy to navigate. For example, Jozan Miura isn’t listed in the index but is named under mumyoi-yaki, and a couple entries for Jozan Yamada III are off by a page or two. However, the content is solid.

I’m looking forward to digging deeper into this book. Thank you, @Darbotek for bringing this to nice book to light.

My pleasure!

I love that so many people ordered, it sent up red flags.

Edit: It’s now out of stock!

FYI, if you are interested in having a look at this book, then the entire book is available for viewing in the Internet Archive library at: https://archive.org/details/modernjapan ... e/mode/2up
You have to sign up to archive.org to be able to view the whole book for an hour (you can't download the book). The quality of the scan is fairly decent; I think the scan is certainly good enough to decide if you want to buy the book - used copies are about $25 on Amazon.

There are a few other Japanese pottery books in the library as well.
