I'm going to Japan, and want to visit some shops to look at teaware (tetsubin, kyusu, chawan). I want to avoid the most touristy stuff (e.g. I saw the same tetsubin in different cities last time I was there) and find something realtively decent, but at the same time avoid the very expensive high-end art pieces (though I might go to such a place just to look). Does anyone have suggestions? I'll be around the Kansai area (including Kyoto and Uji), and will try to stop by Tokoname on my way to Tokyo.

From what i've heard there are plenty of "flea markets" in for instance Kyoto that have fantastic items. Its a dream of mine to one day go there and go through it all. I would suggest keeping eyes out on what the people are selling themselves.

in Kyoto, there are some nice galleries around Kiyomizu-dera temple. my favorite was maybe asahido. asahido has 2 or 3 galleries in the same area (a few minutes apart by foot), so be sure to look at all of them. google maps didn't seem to be aware of this when i was there. if you can manage to find one of them, the staff can tell you where the others are.

if you are interested in tokoname, read here
