Sharing some information here about Benshan Lüni(本山绿泥) I've learned from the edxrf team:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2543
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, vertical or inclined deep wells were excavated, so the Benshan green clay at that time should belong to deep mines.

The modern strict Benshan green clay refers to the deep green clay of Well No. 4, which started around 1970 and was
closed in 1997. This is the official map of
Yixing Zisha. The black circle is
Dingshu Town, which generally
refers to the location of
Huanglong Mountain, and the
red circle is Hufu Town (location of shallow mines where some modern ben shan lu ni is sourced).

Regarding difference between shallow and deep mine luni:

In addition to the difference in mineral composition, in generally, the deeper ore, the higher the strontium content.

Note that hufu village (湖濫镇) and dingshu town (Huang long shan) is only about 8 km from each other. Also most that are available are shallow mine clay from both areas.

Also from Youzi's blog:

Lüni (绿泥) is the rarest of the common Zisha categories. Only around 2% of all Zisha is Lüni. It is named after the color of the raw ore. Like most Zisha, Lüni is from Huanglongshan (黄龙山); therefore, it is mostly referred to as Benshan Lüni(本山绿泥), aka Original Mountain Lüni.

Lüni needs to be high fired, otherwise, it can “spit black” (吐黑) or crack from usage. Lüni has the best air permeability and heat preservation of all Zisha. However, these properties can vary according to where the material was mined, and the depth from which it was mined.

After firing it usually has a kind of pastel yellow, satin, beige coloration.
