The craftsmanship of the second pot is much better. That's the reason why this pot is more expensive in my opinion. Many others here consider the EoT teapot a bad teapot because it's from the 90's and F2. I don't have much experience with F2 pots, so I cannot comment on that. I don't think the others would agree with me, but the first pot isn't that bad if you are looking for an inexpensive one. ;)

Nonetheless, I found this reasonably priced Hongni Shuiping http://zishaartgallery.com/product/%e7% ... 5%a3%b6-8/- I think it's likely around 80-90ml judging by the dimensions given for other pots on the site, but I've submitted a request for more info on the site in any case - but wasn't sure why this particular pot seems to be less than half of the price of, say, this pot: http://zishaartgallery.com/product/6%e6 ... b6-za0103/. Presumably the gulf between the 70's and the 80's is just that huge.
The first one looks like green label era, the second looks to be early 70s hongni which is much more rare and desirable clay, the pricing reflects it. Both should be good user pots. IMO the price on the higher end, but reasonable, reflecting the market price.

That 1st pot doesn’t look like pure hongni. It might be zini coated inside + out w/ hongni which would explain why it is so cheap.

The second one is definitely a significantly better pot since it is pre-77 hongni w/o any additives.

The EOT pot is a poor choice for Gaoshan due to muting properties of that clay.

Hmm, okay. There are plenty of pots listed on the site that are explicitly called 內紫外紅, e.g., http://zishaartgallery.com/product/6%e6 ... b6-za0085/ so perhaps the vendor made a mistake with this one. Do you think that the cheaper pot is worth the money vs. sticking with porcelain? If deciding to buy a pot would it be best to simply dive into the deep end with the $400 one?

Okay, thanks! Going to have to do some thinking, I suppose, particularly if the first pot is not actually even unadulterated hongni....

I'd just ask the seller what clay this is. If you do please let us know. :D

Personally, I'd go with the $400 one. Simply because you may end up there anyways, but only if you end up wanting more yixing. If you don't think you'll fall down the yixing rabbit hole, the cheaper one might be fine. I'd bet you could see clearly side by side the advantage the pre-77 has one in brewing.

That isn’t the same thing. This pot is only coated on the outside.

This is a Neiwailinjiang pot (coated inside out).

IT IS labeled " hongni shuiping hu (红泥水平壶)" tho. I thought at first with the close up pictures it kind of looked like niangao, which would definitely explain its low price, but I'm not really sure tbh.

Yes, sorry for the confusing comment, I realize that you were suggesting that both the interior and exterior were coated. I meant that it seems odd for the vendor to acknowledge the presence of zini in the instances where there was no Hongni coating on the interior but not those in which there is, particularly if they are reputable and want to maintain that reputation, hence my guess that they might have made a mistake. I just submitted a query asking them to clarify, but your comment is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to see BEFORE pulling the trigger, so I appreciate your urging caution.

@Chadrinkincat

But the seller refers to the pot as HongNi. If the pot is only coated with HongNi this wouldn't be honest in my opinion.

It could easily be a mistake in labeling the pot or I could be mistaken about clay. The price suggest it is a coated pot though.

How confident are you that this pot (http://zishaartgallery.com/product/6%e6 ... b6-za0103/) is pre 1977? The reason I ask is that the date simply says "70's," whereas this pot (http://zishaartgallery.com/product/%e7% ... b6-za0171/) says "early 70's." I may end up going with the more expensive pot, so I'd like to be sure. Thanks for your help thus far, and I'll be sure to update everyone once the vendor gets back to me regarding the other pot.

ZAG has a very good reputation, so I'd just ask them if they can be more specific about the age.

You could also ask in this Facebook group for more information, but you cannot do this before the purchase (you need to write your name on a piece of paper and take a photo of it together with the pot): https://www.facebook.com/groups/teapot2/ I would always ask them especially if the pot was that expensive.
