On funnier Yixing news, just saw this from Purple Cloud teahouse "custom made pots" https://www.instagram.com/p/CNoig89gWYv/, which do look exactly the same as the wildly popular custom made ones from Essence of tea: https://essenceoftea.com/collections/yi ... ing-teapot

Seems the potters in Yixing are having a blast recently with "custom made" pots... or the copycats jumping on the train started rolling by EoT.

Isn't purple cloud just a reseller of Western vendors' stuff, who don't have a us warehouse? I saw m&l teapots there too and i think from other shops as well.

Can be, but in this case they have custom engraving on the bottom. Would that makes sense to resell stuff? M&L is in Canada right? Just next door.

Maybe we can guess from the price. It also could be, that's they placed a wholesale custom order through EoT.

M&L is legally in Canada, but technically in china. They ship and operate from there. I don't know if they've finally opened a warehouse in Canada or not.

@Bok

It is prob a lot easier for a US based shop to resell stuff from western facing vendors in China than it would be to form new connections there.

That might be the case yes. Still a bit odd though, don’t think the price difference is large enough to prioritise a US based buy vs shipping from Asia. Especially it would only make sense for the Yixing potter, not so much for the intermediary to share the Yixing source, it would take away from their own customer base, especially for custom made pots, no?

Btw what is the going rate for 8cup (160ml) these days?
easily over $1k
Thanks! crazy how expensive these 60’s pots are.

Interesting that ZAG stocks the smaller sizes but I’ve yet to see anything over 80ml.

A sale is a sale. Suppose EoT sells wholesale and direct. Each time they add a new retail partner, each sale they "lose" on the direct-to-customer side they gain on the wholesale side. In addition to that, they gaining additional sales because the new retailer reaches customer they would not have captured. The right wholesale price is basically the price where you maximize your total profit. Whether that profit comes from direct sales or not, who cares?

It also makes sense that potters will not want to deal with many individual retailers, They probably concentrate on making pots, not logistics and distribution. It seems to me having a couple of trusted distributors makes sense from the potter's point of view.

Only if you assume that teapot is the main reason people shop at EOT.

I've seen a couple of more popular artists recently posting things to this effect; basically that they want to do their work (making the pots) and the vendors/galleries have the job of selling and they don't want to be bothered with it. I imagine replying to every instagram impulse message of "Gorgeous!!- Is this available????", maybe in every language other than your own, and maybe often followed by silence once the "buyer" gets the actual price or asking if it can be made 10ml smaller gets very old very fast.

This pot has caught my eye, was told it’s 60s hongni. To my untrained eye, it looks like hongni with less aggressive lighting and looks a bit like a hong qsn pot I’ve seen posted here before with brighter lighting. Also the inner marks just look suspect to me for some reason too.. any thoughts/clarification would be appreciated!!
