As it turns out our local tea shop sells yerba mate and I purchased a couple ounces. Regardless of the quality I thought I could at least decide if mate was something I wished to pursue. I used 5g per cup of water, at 176F. I steeped for 3 minutes in our French press. Both the wife and I liked it. It has kind of an herbal sweetness to it, with some very light bitterness. After a couple cups I had no negative reaction to the caffeine and as "advertised" a calm wakefulness ensued. Anyway, certainly worth pursuing. Once these two ounces are gone I'll try some of the brands suggested here. Thanks!

With stems ‘con palo’ is stronger, without stems ‘sin palo’ a little milder.

.
I think this is backwards.
While I really like Canarias and Rosemante Especiale, my current favorite by far comes from Goyerbamate.com. Their organic unsmoked Itapua (sin Palo) is fantastic and has virtually no powder.

Regarding how to drink it, a French press will suffice but using a bombilla (filtering metal straw) is much better. As nice and traditional gourds/horns/wood are, I like the silicone mate I mentioned in another thread.

An old thread I wanted to contribute to and bump up. Glad to hear you enjoyed your first yerba mate. Curious if you've had the chance to try it again since the last time you updated us? Any practiular brands? I'm a big big big fan of yerba mate :D

I suggest you look into these guys here: https://metamate.cc/the-meta-difference/
In my humble opinion, they have the best mate by far. Plus, good company, good ethics.

Was just wondering what I’d like to sip on next, Maté! Amazing match, truly world class. Now the GOAT (Greatest of all time) has GOLD! 🐐
