Date this old TGY

I found some pretty old Sea Dyke TGY at my local market.

It has distinctive aged oolong character of vanilla/leather/tobacco, woody, with some cooling sensation. Compared to the many aged oolongs that I have enjoyed, I would say it is pretty damn good, but not exceptional.

I found a similar package of TGY for sale on the internet marked as 2007, and the package uses a different terminology for the export company - “Xiamen tea imp. and export co. Ltd”.

This package uses a different name which you can see in the picture.

Does anyone have any info about when sea dyke changed the language for the export co on the packages? There is no date to speak of in English or Chinese.

These packages are pretty inexpensive and I would be happy to swap with interested parties.

Thanks!

I'm guessing it's from before early 90's, as it is still produced under CNNP Imp. Exp. Corp. Fujian Tea Branch, rather than Xiamen Tea Imp. Exp. Co. as it was later renamed (not sure about the date but around late 80's/early 90's).
But after 60's, when the spelling was China National Native Produce & Animal By-products I&E Corp., Fukien Branch...
EDIT: Looks like China National Native Produce & Animal By-products I&E Corp. was established in 1970 according to http://www.chinatea.com.cn/en/history.html

The flavors you list are not what I have tasted from aged oolongs (e.g., vanilla & tobacco). Interesting!

Is this roasted?

Cheers

Strictly speaking the only way to verify the age of the tea is to track its provenance. We can verify the age of the box, but it's just a box; there is nothing to prevent someone from putting a foil-lined pouch of tea inside if they think it will cause the tea to be sold more quickly or for more money.

So the best place to start is to ask the grocer, "Who did you buy this from? Do you remember when?" Then go to that person and ask the same question. Try to verify memories with physical documents, such as receipts if it is not too troublesome. Some will be evasive, but others will happily answer your questions.

Thanks to all for the insight.
As to the question of roasting, there is little evidence in the flavor of heavy roasting. That said, with the suspected age of the tea and darkening of the leaves, I couldn’t say that it is not roasted whatsoever. If my understanding of Fujian TGY history is sound, roasted was the popular method, pre-2000s.

To reiterate, there is a pile of this stuff at my local Asian market, and it costs just a few dollars per box, if anyone is interested.

Welcome to TeaForum @BuckyJ. We don’t know where you are yet since you haven’t made an introduction yet :) ~ Have you enjoyed drinking this tea, after trying a few times? since you mention at first it’s not exceptional, yet you are very curious, which leads me to think you like it 🍃.

Hi Victoria,
I knew new users couldn't send PM's, but didn't know they can't respond. Can they at least read PM's?
I just can't find how to email the poster. :( Is this option available to normal users? Is there a more detailed guide how to do it somewhere? Anyway, i will PM my email.

@Victoria
It doesn't show for me. (But maybe that's a good thing.)
I see you have links to your FB, Twitter and IG accounts accessible from your "Contact" icon - I'll try to do the same.
