I would like to buy a cake of Dayi 7542 of 2006-2010 year range, which year of this range would be best to get, which batch, and from where? Before I've only had a sample of this recipe from IIRC 2001 and it was pretty good, so I want to get a full cake of this recipe as a reference factory tea.

@rainy
If you like your sample from IIRC 2001, then that's what you go for. Personally, I find post 2005 Dayi 7542 very disappointing. There were occasions where I found smaller brands producing better quality tea at a much lower price. I'm generally referring to proper Malaysian and HongKong Stored Puerh.
Cheers!

I am with octo that the pre-bubble 7542's are much better. I have a couple of these around but to be honest I like the Spring of Menghai and the 7532's a bit more. Just my preference though. And seeing how you liked the 2001 I would try and find another if you could.

Thanks for the replies! , I think 2001 is going to be a bit too expensive for me, that's why I was thinking 2007 or so.
If not 7542, what would be a good "reference" cake to get under $100 or so? I'm looking more for milder, sweeter taste profile than anything too intense or smoky or whatnot.

Teas We Like has a 2010 version of the 7542 that I quite like - very nice aroma with good stone fruit notes.

Wonder if rainy would like one of those HK style 8582's that I have?

Any favorite source/year for Spring of Menghai? I’d like to try it out. Regarding 7542, I’ve been fortunate enough to try a few 2003-2005 cakes. Compared to the 2018 cake that I purchased, they seem vastly different. 13 years is a long time, but I can’t imagine that these cakes will be equally good.

I have a couple of the 2005 and 2006 productions. They seem better than the 07's and 08's I have. I do remember the 2012 production to be a nice one as well.

There are a number of Aliexpress vendors currently selling the 2010 edition for €13 or €14 a cake. This seems suspiciously cheap for brand-name factory cake of such an age. Would that have been a lesser year?

..could also be not-so-good batches, but can easily be fakes too.

Dayi is #1 counterfeited brand. Too cheap to be legit unless vendor hasn’t updated their prices in years which won’t be the case on Aliexpress

I think I am going to order one. How would I know that it is counterfeit? Do they fake those fancy hologrammed wrapper security seals too?

Other people have went that route before for the fun of it. Can be educative, or can be a waste of money.

If you want to link the item for sale in here I can take a look and see if there any discrepancies on it that stand out. Wrapper, seals and so forth.
