I am doing something somewhat similar with LiShan after the third steep, putting leaves into a larger Tokoname kyusu, covering with water, place on top of a mug warmer aka iWarmer for an hour or so over low heat. The results are perfect with food and or casual drinking.

2015 Yunnan Sourcing Bai Ni Shui old arbor raw pu-erh.

With the amassing of pu'er teas in the past many of the tea club samples were left behind untouched. For the past few months I have been catching up but it will be quite a few more months to clear the piles of sheng samples. :D

Enjoying 2013 Love Forever tonight, a kind gift from @pedant. It is a Xiaguan Feitai blend, apparently made of 2003 MaoCha from BanZhang tea region, that was stored naturally for 10 years, and then compressed into cakes in 2013. Sweet aroma fills the air, with a smooth woody liquor, and sweet lingering after taste that in later steeps turns slightly astringent. Some pleasant bitterness appeared if steeped too long. Lingering rich aroma fills the empty cup, with a sweet aftertaste.

Sipping on this sheng inspired me to listen again to a new song by Sade that I recently heard, The Big Unknown, ... “only love could bring us to this bitter plane... only one of us who's gonna walk away, here in the deep below, that only darkness really knows...no I won't surrender to this hard hearted night”.... Hmmm, it is thick and dreamy like this sheng.

Today is the turn of the 2015 Yunnan Sourcing Da Hu Sai raw pu-erh tea sample. Aromatic and flavourful which I am enjoying very much.

2013 Yunnan Sourcing Da Si Ancient Arbor raw pu'er tea of Feng Qing. In my last 10 grams of a sample. Quality not easily seen nowadays for a young pu'er tea.

Had some loose shou from 1980 yesterday: a trade sample from a HK vendor after we got talking about traditional storage shu pu. He gave it to me at the beginning of the month, and absolutely made my day with it since I was born in 1980. I saved the sample for my birthday (yesterday), and put the whole 12g or so into a 185ml green label zini shuiping (HK market exclusive, made to a higher standard than normal for Factory 1).

It was very smooth and pleasant and still had some good, thick liquor in the second infusion. There was also some residual bitterness, which I didn't expect. Most of the traditional storage taste has aged out and the tea had more longevity than two of us could handle! I finished it off this morning and got two very solid infusions out of the material. A lovely tea, and it was both calming and energizing.

Sounds nice, Jay. I've only had a few traditionally stored shus (all from you), but really enjoyed them. Nothing quite as vintage as 1980 though :)

Drinking the "White Whale" today, which has held up remarkably well after 5-6 years of "natural" storage here in Oslo and then about six months in a crock with better humidity and temperature parameters. A big relief, as I still have four bricks left (picked up just below ten bricks when they sold for $15 a piece, that is before the Half-Dipper review caused the price to double). A really solid daily drinker.

Sipping 2004 xiaguan teji tuo. Smoke almost gone nice sweetness, leather, camphor, not much bitterness

I have many samples that I’ve had in my home for more than 5 years that are no longer available from the original vendors. Sometimes I hesitate to try them because if I fall in love with the tea I won’t be able to get more.

I ended up ordering a cake of Bana Limited Edition 2008 Raw Puerh after experimenting with a sample. I added a cake of Speechless Euphoria 2015 to the order based on the name and description. I’ve been enjoying it a bit at a time since I need to limit my total tea consumption. Today I brewed 1 gram of it in a 25 ml Zuni pot.

Bana might not be the most economical source for puerh but I find that their descriptions and brewing instructions are on target for me.

To help with the sense of scale, how much do those cups hold that are sitting next to the 25 mL pot?

I’ve got one tiny 30 mL pot that I admit I bought mostly for the tiny cuteness, but it does brew decent tea. And I’ve used it a few times for micro gongfu sessions when I want to limit caffeine in the evening.

I bought the 25 ml pot because it was described as being well made and brewing good tea. I need to limit my tea intake due to tummy troubles and if a Yancha or puer can last for 6 or 8 steeps I need a small pot. Here it is next to one of the cups.

Here is the other cup from the set next to a 40 ml pot that I purchased years ago based on discussions on tea chat. The output of this pot is as much as the cup can safely hold. It doesn’t brew tea as well as the smaller pot.


I purchased the cups in Bangkok just because they’re cute in a menacing way. They’re figures from The Ramakien, which I think of as the Thai version of the Ramayana.

Yes it does seem to be the same problem with me but I am avoiding buying any more teas although I have added already two tea cakes from these samples to my wishlist in YS... :D
