The GTH blue mark replica I have is likely strong wet storage notes. I would describe the smell as more like a mildew-heavy basement and for my tastes would say it is bad storage, but recognize others may be OK with it. I have some airing out. I had also read about baking tea as a salvaging method, so thanks for the reminder about that. I will try roasting a small amount, as well.

@Hachachacha I noticed it tastes nothing like the Sheng from similar ages I’ve tried...but more like the ripes I’ve had. It looks more like a shou too. I think it’s a mix of Sheng and shou but I guess extremely wet humid storage would also make it look and taste like a shou? I will say it has a very sedating mental and physical affect feeling like a Xanax or something. Quite nice feeling.

I bought a cake of their “high road” which is supposedly a young Sheng from “1,000 - 2,000 year old trees” which I find hard to believe based on everything I’ve gathered. It hasn’t arrived yet but I figure always give a vendor at least a 2nd try. Hoping I like it.

I had a chance to ask Puerh Junky a few questions about GTH Blue Mark replica. He shared this sheng with our LA Tea group in June, thus my post about it. Well as suspected, he let chunks of the cake air out for +-6months. He said it smell yank, that it reeked when he first got it, so he just let it air out a while, with the lid of a tin loose, inside a wooden desk secretary. Airing it out mellowed it out, leading to clean, crisp, complex notes of spice and fruit which I posted.

Regarding storage, Global Tea Hut, a reputable source, would have no reason to misrepresent storage of what they are sharing with tea community. From their December 2018 magazine issue;
It was kept by a collector on the second floor for the entire eighteen years it has been alive, at a very nice humidity and temperature, making the storage also clean. Based on the flavor profile, Wu De and the donor believe the tea to include lots of old-growth raw material from the greater Yiwu area, perhaps blended with some Menghai and/or Nannuo maocha as well. Our Blue Mark is bright and crisp, with an uplifting energy and a deep, rich, complex flavor profile of spices, wood and some slight emerging flavors of Chinese herbs.
Letting aged pu’erh air out a while is a very common practice. Watching it evolve, and unfold, is part of its magic.

I would recommend airing it too. Seems like HK storage early and then maybe a bit drier later on.

@Victoria thanks for the tip I’ll give it some time to air out.
