Re: Yerba Mate Advice

As it turns out our local tea shop sells yerba mate and I purchased a couple ounces. Regardless of the quality I thought I could at least decide if mate was something I wished to pursue. I used 5g per cup of water, at 176F. I steeped for 3 minutes in our French press. Both the wife and I liked it. I...

Yerba Mate Advice

I'd like to try yerba mate. I've done a little reading but don't know much at this point. If anyone has recommendations for vendors, types/brands of yerba mate, trusted links, etc. I'd appreciate it. I see Guayaki San Mateo and Cruz De Malta mentioned a lot. Also, I'd like to try mate before purchas...

Documentary: Out of the Fire

Last night I watched a documentary I really enjoyed. Maybe some of you've seen it, but if not it's worth a watch if you're into pottery or art. It's about potter Kevin Crowe and his four day wood kiln firing. Out of the Fire (2013) [Courtenay Singer] This inspiring documentary film features renowned...

Re: Organic Tea

Just curious. For those of you who would prefer to purchase organic tea, or do purchase organic, how many of you currently buy organic fruits and vegetables?

Re: Umami in Matcha

if you've read definitions of umami taste as well as lists of foods known to have it, but you still have doubts about what umami is, the best thing i can suggest is to acquire pure MSG and taste it. you can get it on amazon ($5) or from asian grocery stores. after that, you will know unambiguously ...

When describing umami in tea to my son I have described it as being brothy.

FWIW, I am not sure I've noticed umami in matcha (there's a lot going on!) but it is very apparent in many gyokuro teas when brewed strongly, like 4g/40ml.
Thanks @Baisao :)

Happy to help out! I've been to Omaha twice and one of my good friends moved out there 1-2 years ago. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my time there.
@chofmann
Glad you found your time in Omaha enjoyable! If you ever make it back, let me know and we'll get together for some tea :)
