Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul
Seems you've set a project for yourself. What a thorough post. It sounds like you're a tea speculator. You have to understand that if you're seeking to speculate that you must purchase productions that are highly regarded or have the potential to be highly regarded in future. You must recognize tha...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul
Right now, I have some ~2005 cakes that are really nice. I feel like 15 years is a good place to start really enjoying (depending on storage, of course). Were these cakes stored for 15 years in your own appartment? The first thing I would consider before making any decision about how much puer to b...

Hope you find it useful!

Buying Pu'erh for the long haul
I know this topic has been discussed before, but there are a few considerations that I havent figured out. Plus, y'all are way more knowledgable and will probably teach me some stuff. So I did "the" calculation last night. I'm assuming I have about 30-40 years of tea drinking ahead of me. I average ...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking
2003 Hong Kong Henry “Conscientious Prescription” 7542 from TWL Just what I needed. Nice dark notes, herbaceous wood, incense. Smooth and easy drinking with a calming energy. I mislabeled the jar last month and drank about 3 sessions of this pretty heavy handedly, thinking it was the 2008 Dayi 8582....

Re: Humidity Control: DIY Salt Packs
put a shot glass or bottle cap of saturated NaCl solution (+ excess NaCl) in a high quality ziplock bag or a canning jar or something with your hygrometer and leave it for a while at room temp. if it doesn't read 74-75%, your hygrometer is out of cal. Thanks. This was a good idea. One of my hydrome...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking
Many people like to read "Alishan" or "Lishan" etc. Or 2200 meters ... I have the same impression. People seem to be more obsessed about the supposed story and origin behind a tea, rather than its actual qualities. For me, it was really hard when I started out. I had no idea what excellent tea is s...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking
It's always a good day when I get a box from Taiwan! 20200616_115654.jpg 2020 Spring gaoshan Alishan and Lishan I was told that 2 jin were Dayuling 89k. She romanized the farm to BiLuXi, but I can't find info on it. From what I see on this forum, "real" Dayuling is higher up the road than 89K. Plus,...

Re: Humidity Control: DIY Salt Packs
I've been using a pure NaCl mixture in my wine coolers for about a year now. I have 2 setups. One for sheng and one for shou. My RH is always between 69-71%. Does anyone know why my reading are lower than the 75% noted in the references in the original post? I have 2 hydrometers from differnet brand...

Re: Yixing teapot - maintain temperature with surrounding water?
I think that's a good explanation, thanks, Bok :) but I dont see that being a big deal for the first steep. And after the first steep you empty the water in a wastewater bowl/jar? I am asking because I have seen people nearly drowning the teapot in wastewater during the whole session and this defin...

Re: Yixing teapot - maintain temperature with surrounding water?
I always pour my rinses on my pot to try to develope a patina. It seems to reason that waste water is cooler than the pot, so it would indeed cool it, but I dont see that being a big deal for the first steep. What I've witnessed on subsequent steeps, is people pouring water from the kettle over the ...

Re: Shincha 2020, "the Year of COVID-19"
faj and Chip Thanks for your comments. It's good to know that I'm on the right track, even if the train is going in the wrong direction. I decreased my tea/ water ratio down to 7g/140mL. I did not preheat my teapot, kept water at 160°C and I shortened the first infusion to 30s. This definitely got ...

Re: Shincha 2020, "the Year of COVID-19"
Received my tea from O-cha yesterday. It was shipped out Sunday night!! Amazing that I can get something from Japan in less than 2 days. I split 5 bags with 3 friends, so we are struggling with the best way to do this. We dont want to open all 5 bags at once, because they will lose their freshness. ...

Re: Puerh Vendor Topic
I have never tasted a good Puer from Yunnan Sourcing. 7 years ago, I bought samples from them I didn't like any of their teas. Last month, I bought higher end samples but they all tasted mediocre. This also include their expensive 2017 Spring Bing Dao. When I started, I went through dozens of YS yo...
