Re: Time between steeps?

Yes. I agree. The more that I get comfortable brewing, the less reliant I am on measuring things. Of course, this was NOT the case when I was new to tea. I had no idea what the right time and amounts were, so I had to measure them. I guess you could learn to brew without the use of these aids. It mi...

Time between steeps?

I'm curious how most people manage time between steeps. I like to let them cool slightly, to avoid stewing the leaves. But, I also want to keep heat in them so that the next infusion isnt too cool. If I'm focused on the tea, I will brew in pretty quick succession. I would estimate 1-2 minutes betwee...

This is so bad ass. One day, I hope to find some time to learn basic coding. I would definitely set this up. Thank for sharing, Atlas!!!

Re: Where Do You Go For High Quality?

For example, I focus on Taiwanese high mountain oolong. Even with such a narrow focus, there are books and books written on the subject. Rickpatbrown I am unaware of any books (in English) that have been written on this topic and I desperately would like to find some. Do you have suggestions? Title...

Re: Where Do You Go For High Quality?

When I started, I had to randomly pick sample size amounts from large retailers that offer many types. Usually, these retailers have lower quality, but it's easier to get a survey of many different teas. After trying many, I found it easiest to focus on 1 or 2 specific tea areas and read and drink a...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking

A friend gave me this cake. It doesnt have a date anywhere that I see, but my guess is 8-10 years old. It still has some of its wild youth character left, but is definitely starting to age. I'm looking forward to see how it mellows and developed over time. I think it has some good promise. All I kno...

Re: Water Water Everywhere... What’s Your Water?

So what water are you now using for your tea, tap?... I've been doing a 50/50 mix with Mt. Valley Spring water and either Poland or filtered tap to cut the high TDS of the MV water. I do think Walgreens Nice! Icelandic Glacier water was the best, but it's really expensive. When you come back to Mar...

Re: Water Water Everywhere... What’s Your Water?

I've recently noticed that my Poland Springs water has a sweet, floral smell. Maybe it's soap from washing the bottles in the factory? Worse could be some sort of industrial chemical contamination. I think I'm going to stop using Poland at this point. I don't like contributing to the plastic problem...

Re: tea when you travel

I've used an immersion heater, but that required traveling with a glass or ceramic mug, or a glass pitcher, and it was really no smaller/lighter than bringing this cheap, light and sturdy kettle. It has little to recommend it aside from those qualities, but they are useful on long flights. You figu...

Has anyone ever tried using an immersion heater? This just occured to me to be the ultimate in portability. Also looks like a good way to start a fire

Re: Vacuum sealers?

Every bit of the packaging that I do use is compostable (pouches, cartons, fillers, tape etc.) I appreciate this greatly! It is tough to have to choose between sustainability and better tea. I have noticed that some retailers use a lighter weight silver lined plastic that is compatible with my food...

Dayuling on the creek. Absolutely gorgeous day here in Maryland.

I have to say. Although it really is a wonderful experience drinking tea in nature, it can be difficult to focus on and appreciate the tea. Next time, I'll probably take a lower grade tea out with me.

Re: Steeping leaves with extra space in the pot

This is an approach that I have recently been taking as well. At work, I always end up with small amounts of tea at the end of a bag (3-4 grams). I had about 6 of these in me desk drawer, not sure what to do with them since my work gaiwan is 150mL. Now, I do my first infusion only halfway full, then...
