Re: Yancha Vendors: Highest Grade vs Bang for Buck Vendor Recommendations
You get what you pay for mostly: cheap won’t be good and expensive is not necessarily good, but no such thing as cheap yancha. I guess it would be interesting to get a feel for how the informal quality/price "curve" looks like. Let me start with what you said : "cheap won't be good". What do you th...

Re: Popularity of Tea - Forums and other Outlets
The structure of supply for tea compared to, say, music, is very different, and I think this deeply affects interaction between amateurs. Each tea has limited supply. I cannot enjoy a specific tea from a given supplier... along with 2 million other fellow tea drinkers. So either I become part of a s...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
faj would be interesting if you tried this blindfolded (without spilling haha) to see if your visual perception changes things... For my first test (pouring the first and second halves separately), a blind test is not necessary : the differences are very significant, even sensory bias taken into ac...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
This morning, I went ahead and tested the same Sae Midori, with the same brewing parameters I previously used, but adding a circular mixing motion throughout the infusion. As was to be expected since this is a deep steamed sencha, the first infusion came out quite cloudy. I could detect neither the ...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
I often pour water backwards through the spout of my pot to keep the filters less clogged....and I haven't noticed any increase in astringency from the resulting gentle agitation I do that too with hohins I have. I would not say they tend to clog, but I kind of like how the way of filling very gent...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
Fair cups do have a reason, for sure. I assume the turbulence of the tea pouring will take care of mixing a single cup, but for sharing....fair cup. Of course, fair cups and "fair pouring techniques" should be used and exist for a reason. My experiment was really only me being curious. But the resu...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
Maybe your first pour is greener because the smallest particles of very fine Sae Midori needles come out first into cup. Because the second half of the infusion is just as intensely colored as the first but yellow rather than green, I would say the difference cannot be explained only by "something ...

Re: What Green Are You Drinking
For a while, I have noticed that when I pour sencha in my cup, it is very green at first, but then the color in the cup changes to something more yellow as I continue pouring. I wondered how much of that was just an optical illusion due to how full the cup was, and how much was an actual difference ...

Re: Japanese Clay pairings with Chinese/Taiwanese teas
On a separate note, I'm curious how accurate people find Hojo's pairing recommendations. If you want to get one pot, I guess it matters whether his recommendations are good or not. I do not feel I am experienced enough to answer this. Maybe you have preferences similar to his, maybe not. But if you...

Re: Researching a new Kyusu
This would be for Sencha, light and medium streamed. Please allow me to share my experience, but please keep in mind I am not giving advice or making recommendations, as I am really not experienced enough for that. I have a few pots, and intend to grow that collection. I have found different teapot...

Re: Does size really matter?
That's interesting. I guess you can get better extractions. Because the larger pot thus sustained heat, and more "space" in the water, allows for more to be extracted? Scientific measurements would be required to see if there is actually more "extracted", and if so, what. One thing to keep in mind,...

Hoping to see the purchases each of you have selected. I realize I might have given the impression I purchased something from that store, but that is not what I meant, I was mostly playing with words. Sorry for the confusion. My teapot purchases have reached what my kids would call TAD-level if the...
