Re: "Neutral" Clays
Has anyone tried Jianshui clay with green oolongs? I kind of discounted it because of the thicker walls, but it's interesting to hear that it has low porosity. From what I gather Jianshui's (Nixing as well) main plus point is that it is cheap... Have not heard of many who really love it for much el...

Re: Storage Failure
hi Kelly , I saw your post about Hojo here and your loss of aroma. I still have some issues, but I think a lot of them boil down to being climate seasonal changes that maybe even sometimes aren't drying the tea out while in humidity controlled storage but also just that the dry season everything goe...

Re: modern Tokoname and mass production
nice carving on that one DailyTX - I like how it has ink painting type shading look to it. I still don't have any tokoname that I can say for sure is 100%. I have a soft spot for these roughly made vintage pots that tend to be made in Chinese style shapes, but they almost never have any markings on ...

Re: Chaozhou/Shantou
Admiring a bit the old patina (uhh... dirt really...) of this new to me late Qing pot before I clean it up and start over. Just under 60ml this is now my smallest pot. Not sure if the tomobako was actually commissioned/made for this pot or if the bottom says something totally unrelated. Rather rough...

Re: How do you consistently get Hui Gan?
One way to get the material more consistent if you haven't already done so is to break up and properly 'wake up' the cake. Not only would it help even out the distribution of the different type of material if the cake is inconsistent, but also what parts of the cake have seen more air exposure than ...

Re: Yixing
Yeah I don't know how much faith I have in that claim either, but no big deal either way since what matters to me is how it brews in the end. I do wonder if the darker color is that blend/batch of ore or from the firing temp - its so much darker and more brown that modern DCQ I've seen, but my selec...

Re: Yixing
New to me 90s DCQ. Tried it out today with some HK wet storage sheng and it worked out pretty decent, but it's with liu bao where it really shines. Def will be trying to get my hands on more of this clay to compare different firings and production periods - I'm totally sold on it. ./download/file.p...

Re: The Porcelain Thread
For sure it is all subjective. For the types of tea I drink I find porcelain often doesn't prove that great even as a neutral assessment tool because its just not the appropriate choice for most of what I drink anyway. So I have a different clay pot I use for those purposes - I know what that pot do...

Re: Chaozhou/Shantou
nice one DailyTX . I've seen quite a few damaged pots, both CZ and yixing, where they file them down like this and I think its always quite a nice look. Some shuiping bodies I think look nicer with the modified canon spout than some actual variations on the ju lun shape do. I feel like the slurry co...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking
Can second that I've found the same pots on there myself. I realize there is always taxes, shipping, the things Bok mentions, but the price difference was quite large on some of them which made me a bit suspicious of the quality of clay used on certain pieces. There were also some 'antique ROC yixin...

Re: Yixing
Not to oversimplify the reaction of various elements since we know these things never go quite how we think... But I'm not sure high iron will reduce astringency. Take Japanese banko clay for example - the purple color comes from the high iron content added to what sounds like is most often clay fro...

Re: What HeiCha are you drinking
Balthazar agreed! I use my mid-size mun shou porcelain pot every morning making my thermos of tea for work, but also on a lot of other occasions too. My small one also still is my favorite pot for liu an. I feel like these thicker walled porcelain pots from the 80s(?) actually have pretty good heat...

Re: Chaozhou/Shantou
I feel like the #1 way of identifying old CZ pots even before looking at the clay is chipped spouts and lid skirts  Try percarbonate for sure to see how that goes. As for a magic eraser, I doubt it would be abbraisive enough to break down the coating - more that I wouldn't use it just because t...

Re: Taiwanese pots
By no means masterpieces here, but maybe interesting in a historical context or as a curiosity... Here is an example of another Tong Fon/Dong Feng or in this case Tong Fong tea set complete (as far as I know) in the box, as well as some cups and saucers found separately. I have no idea when this wou...
