Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Iron cakes are cakes (bing) that have had the daylights pressed out of it. Flat without the hole and compact. Like tuo and many bricks these productions work best in clay and chunked. Flecking tea from these productions doesn't give a very good effect upon brewing. Just a chunk in the pot and forge...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Some age into expressing more root beer attributes. Some end up being a blend both. Root beer is definitely my fav. must know which ones. :) root beer is my fav. haven't come across a puer that I'd say resembles root beer. I would be the first to say if you want to drink root beer drink root beer, ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Xiaguan Tea Factory, the vaunted Factory #3, most famous for their tuo and iron cakes. Half their production is state controlled for distribution to Tibet. There's a flame mushroom-shaped tuo that is quite popular. They're in the Dali area. Their Gold Ribbon 100g tuo production is quite popular in ...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking

thommes, Noonie For what it's worth I also think the 2007 Pin Xiang "Bu Lang Shan Tuo" is a really great deal. I've probably been through a good kilo of it, and still have an unopened tuo. A very reliable daily drinker for me, and a nice storage profile. It's the best puer deal on YS, IMO (caveat: ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

"my cholesterol went down 100 pts when I drank it ", same result with me as well. There are still bunches of cakes with excellent properties you are looking for without the $500.00 cash output. There are loads of stuff where factories have held maocha to blend in with newer stuff. Some of those 5 a...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

I'd rather not say specifically. I dont know if it is the tea, or if I'm not ready for the tea yet. I will say that it is supposed to be much more oriented to the chi realm. It is not so much known for flavor. I hope that I can learn to open up to the chi aspect of pu'erh. I some point, I might be ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Unfortunately, with internet tea, price is the most obvious metric for value. This is why asked. I realize that people value tea for different reasons. To me the flavor and the way it makes me feel is the most important ... but that is never accurately written in the description of a tea. I'm talki...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

I appreciate the honesty, thank you! My word of the day - "perspective". I paid $500 for my last two orders from YS (about 8 cakes in total) and I thought that was jumping into the deep end. I haven't spent more than $100 on a cake. With some things I do not set high expectations, and I'm usually h...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking

I also love the lao cha tou. not sure why this stuff is typically cheap. I am so happy to still have one unopened brick of Norbu's 2009 Lao Cha Tou, and I when I realized it was the last one, I tried one from YS and liked it so bought a whole box of the little bricks. Plummy, rich, sweet, earthy: i...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking

First sips of the Yunnan Sourcing 2007 Pin Xiang "Bu Lang Shan Tuo" Raw Pu-erh Tea purchased a few weeks ago. At $25 for a 250g Tuo that has many favourable reviews I figured it was a safe bet. First Tuo I've tried, and prying off 50-75g for tasting over the next while wasn't difficult. I used 5g i...

Re: What Pu'er Are You Drinking

This one is different enough that it seems like it should get its own name as fermented tea, as a sparkling wine with little in common in flavor or origin with Champagne. But what would be a good generic term for fermented tea? Hei cha is the term used for fermented chinese teas. Puerh is a hei cha...
