Re: Tea commercials
I suppose related to these MTV ads is the general category of "How is this an ad?" ads where it is maybe not clear what is being promoted other than a feeling, or where the product is not so clear. People tend to have strong opinions on these sorts of ads, as they tend to win awards but not increas...

Re: Tea commercials
A 1950s American-targeted one from Canada's Salada Tea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzMhITj9bsU This one is a little interesting because the ending slogan, "America's 'Quality' Tea", seems likely from an older ad campaign idea. Maybe not obvious, but by the way the announcer pronounced "quality...

Teapot repair books
While online the most interest seems to be in kintsugi or maybe Chinese staple repair (锔瓷) due to its exoticism, I thought maybe a thread for general teapot repair books might be helpful to avoid the polarization between this approach and the "Just glue it and don't worry" approach. Here are the one...

Re: What Black Are You Drinking
./download/file.php?id=11396 Drinking a house-label Earl Grey from Tea & Sympathy in New York. My first impression was negative, as the tea arrived already a bit on the flat side, but it's grown on me -- "Oh, the tin is almost empty-". ...and now the tin is empty. With any luck, my tea collec...

Re: Japanese tea in the United States before World War 2
What kind of green tea was it back then? Was it a steamed sencha of the kind one drinks today or something quite different? The most popular type was sencha, but most was given an extra firing to help with the shelf life, which gave it a different taste than modern sencha. I suspect it was more sim...

Re: Tea commercials
I despise iced tea made from instant tea. It may even be nastier than instant coffee, which I also despise. The thing that amazes me is that there are even some nice restaurants that serve instant iced tea, spoiling what otherwise might have been a pleasant dining experience. Usually the instants s...

Re: Japanese tea in the United States before World War 2
I was thinking of Oscar Wilde's observation from The Decay of Lying , which reminded me of this thread. I know that you are fond of Japanese things. Now, do you really imagine that the Japanese people, as they are presented to us in art, have any existence? If you do, you have never understood Japan...

Re: Tea commercials
I get a kick out of this 1988 Tetley promo -- American Anglophiles are uneasy around Teasmades, but a musical mug with cartoon mascots would have been pure poison to the image of British elegance, especially in 1988. Maybe a counter-argument ad from 1990 for the Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker: htt...

Re: Earl Grey and its children
earlgrey1923.jpg From the other end we have Keemun, the traditional (but not original) base for Earl Grey tea. Most ads up to the 1920s for Earl Grey mention "China tea" rather than a specific tea, such as this Jackson's ad from December 1923. When or how Earl Grey became associated with Keemun in ...

Re: Earl Grey and its children
The common denominator is the bergamot trick, a type of adulteration which is older than Earl Grey itself. Here it is described in an 1824 issue of The Kaleidoscope , for improving the flavor of green tea: To render Tea at 5s. a pound equal to Tea at 12s. - The cheapest and most expensive teas are a...

Earl Grey and its children
I was reminded by Victoria's mention of a lavender Earl Grey that the Earl has had quite a lot of children -- above are a few American hippie-blend Earl Greys from the San Francisco Herb Company back in 1980. I thought maybe a thread on Earl Grey and its children might be interesting.
