Umami in Matcha
I've been blind tasting my way through a bunch of matchas over the last week. The goal is to find a few matcha options for my daily fix. Price range between 0.34 and $1.05/g. These are from Japanese vendors that I think most here would consider putting out decent quality matcha. The second goal for ...

Re: Your day in matcha
Janice Take this with a grain of salt since I'm a matcha newbie, but Hibiki-an's 'Matcha Super Premium' is the least bitter matcha I've tried for under $1 per gram. I wouldn't classify it as bitter at all, but my taster may be different than yours. If you purchase 40g it works out to 0.85/g and if ...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
I have not had enough of different gyokuros to say that the O-Cha Uji gyokuro Gyokuho ($35/100) is great, but I've loved it, and been missing it, and soon will be ordering more. It's forgiving, delicious, slightly floral, quite vegetal, and not super high umami--which is what I prefer. It keeps me ...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
Yes for energy/focus Matcha is very effective. Zen Buddhist monks use Matcha to extend their meditative practice so they don’t fall asleep. In my experience Gyokuro is calmer though, probably because it goes through additional processing steps and storage. I realize you were also asking about inexp...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
This is one of my favorite gyokuros, and in 2018 it was economical enough, around $25 for 100 grams, to be an everyday gyro. The 2018 harvest is sold out and I’m hoping the 2019 harvest will be as good. https://www.thes-du-japon.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_130_4&products_id=515 I w...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
I'm specifically looking for energy/focus without harsh caffeine side effects. Matcha and gyokuro seem to do that for me. I find shaded Japanese teas especially calming and usually turn to gyokuro mecha (made from the the buds separated during gyokuro processing) or konacha(made up of small bits of...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
With gyokuro I typically like to wait until mid-fall since it rests for at least 3+ months after being processed in the spring. This year though I’ve been craving it earlier so jump started my purchases in February. Each vendor tailors their selections to their personal preferences. Some are lighte...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
t-curious, excellent introduction, btw. Welcome to the group. I am fond of Thes du Japon as a seller, not that the others mentioned here are bad. The thing I like about this seller is that there is more focus placed on single estate and single cultivar teas, so they are not blended. There's a place...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
I would say you are looking for low range... good gyokuro can get very pricey. Aside from aged puer, I think gyokuro is one of the most expensive tea types. https://kettl.co/collections/gyokuro-green-tea/products/shizuku-gyokuro This is my standard "daily" gyokuro. It's $32, but for 50g. But I pers...

Re: Gyokuro recommendations
... having said all that, I personally tend to focus on sencha until Winter when my interest naturally begins to lean towards gyokuro. I consider this a ... logical approach since I want my sencha fresh and my gyokuro aged. YMMV ... Thanks for the recommendations and advice Chip The main reason I'm...

Re: Is my sun tea safe?
It sounds like there's microbial growth going on. I wouldn't drink it. It may not be dangerous but why risk it? Are you following some guide online or a recipe from a book or something? Or is this something you dreamed up? :) My mother used to make sun tea using black bag tea. I know she never left ...

Gyokuro recommendations
I bought some gyokuro three years ago from Den's and O-Cha. It's been in my freezer since then. I'm drinking it and it doesn't taste bad, but I know it's not optimal :o  I'd like to delve into gyokuro more and I'm looking for specific recommendations. Teas that people have tried. Price wise, I'...
