Re: Drippy spouts?

With more angled spout like in most pots, when you tilt it to the point that the spout point down vertically the base of the pot will cross over the vertical line. In that case the wet leaves can easily fall instead of sticking nicely to the base. Some people don’t like that as it can make the next...

Re: Drippy spouts?

Ha, just from the opening post I was wondering if it was Jinpachi, guess why.... Anyways while it was mildly disappointing because Toru talks up the poor and had some yt vids of old ones in the end it doesn't much bother me as for mine it only drips if I cut it off mid-pour, something I'm not incli...

I think this is an artistic rather than practical decision. Some Japanese teapot makers are fond of spouts that intentionally resemble a chode.
Uh, can we get a citation for this  I've never heard anything like this in anything related to ceramics in English or Japanese.

Re: Drippy spouts?

^^Thanks for the advice everyone. The thread ended up being a bit whiner sounding then I anticipated, but I appreciate all of the advice so far.
I'm sure I'll be able to figure out a way to get along with this guy ;p

Re: Drippy spouts?

I discussed that with him a little bit. He said that since its used he would have to basically throw it away. Whether that means he would have been willing to do a return I don't know, but it sounded like its something he doesn't do with already used items. There was a teapot by jinpachi that didn'...

Re: Drippy spouts?

"I did reach out to Toru about it, and he basically told me that he can't guarantee that every pot that receive doesn't drip and that he really isn't in a position to ask a potter to "switch out" a pot that drips with a pot that doesn't . He also sent me two videos of pots by Jinpachi and- just lik...

Here's a vid of the pour to give you an idea of how it works.

Re: Drippy spouts?

"...but he does seem to have some designs that clearly don't work as well as others." Without seeing how the spout functions, I was just trying to push the discussion away from works well and not well. I respect your personal preferences, and understand some pots have flaws. I am reminded of my vis...

Re: Drippy spouts?

Reading further on the artist on AN (https://www.artisticnippon.com/product/jinpachi/jinpachi1.html), where his teapots special pour quality is mentioned I do wonder... From looking at them, a lot of his pots have -in my eyes- not optimum spout design. Have you tried pouring very, very slow, one mi...

Re: Drippy spouts?

Yeahhh maybe a mistake on my part for buying it. He's probably the only potter I've seen have his spouts shaped that way(probably for a good reason!). He's been making teapots for 30+ years... so I imagine that you're right in that he's probably more focused on an "artistic pot" rather than a purely...

Re: Drippy spouts?

20200723_162522.jpg 20200723_162516.jpg ^ With the (little) experience I have with teapots, to me it seems like those pots with spouts that have more narrow openings and canals tend to have less issues with pouring, while those that are wider in both areas and have a less defined lip(like my Jinpac...

Re: Drippy spouts?

it's mostly about the pot's geometry. some pots dribble like crazy while others are 100% dribble-proof. most fall somewhere in between. the way you pour (especially how you start and stop) can help a bit, but you said you already experimented with that. i think you just have to use the pot in envir...

Drippy spouts?

Anyone come up with a way to prevent spouts from that tend to drip when their poured? I bought a pot recently by a well known potter who I think generally does really good work, but when I pour with it it drips down water under the spout and onto the pot body, regardless of how I alter my pour style...
