Re: Tea when sick

I do a couple things now when sick. The first is to take an ordinary Indian black tea and add ginger to it. I either slice fresh ginger on a mandolin or use sugar-preserved ginger. I find that the astringency of the ordinary Indian black tea seems to help my throat. The ginger helps with throat, sin...

Re: Facebook vendor: Chemical Free Purple Clay Exchange

The craftsmanship is a lot better than I’d have imagined at that price point. The seams from the press mold seem well hidden and the edges have been cleaned. It goes without saying that the level of customer service you received surpasses what you would receive from the domestic reseller. The seam ...

Re: Doped Teas - An Open Secret?

i just tasted some tea from a bag of dancong that i suspect was sprayed with some flavoring. i got it several years ago and forgot about it, and the aroma is basically gone now. i would not guess that it is dancong by tasting it. it did used to taste like milan xiang. sort of. it had strong but not...

Re: Ode to the Kyusu

Thank you, @chillian12. The inscription is in grass script and I haven’t found anyone IRL who can translate it, but I believe it is the Heart Sutra.

I feel the same about kyusu. Each handmade kyusu has its own personality.

Re: Ode to the Kyusu

ferg , you’re correct about the kyusu. I think it is from Jozan Yamada II. The craftsmanship is sensitive and delicate, if that makes sense. I hope you enjoy the tea. I noticed tonight for the first time that the package says to use 100°. However, I think it is better at 85° since it is closer to o...

Re: Ode to the Kyusu

I’m enjoying some hon yama “wulong,” Kôju cultivar from Thés du Japon in this antique shudei kyusu. The script inscription is so delicate, like it was carved with an eyelash. It has the typical characteristics of hon shudei: a bright, almost tickling texture on the palate. I can’t say that it is bet...

Re: Hojo Tea

upon further reflection, i wonder if it could be possible that it wasn't spam. maybe it was somehow a mistranslation of hojicha (hojotea)? if so, oops. although the description of the tea doesn't sound like hojicha. Yes, I think it’s just an issue of (mis) translation. Hojo / Hoji Cha. From Akira H...

Re: 2023 Shincha Harvest tea recommendations?

Unpopular opinion: shincha is overrated. It's like drinking wine that hasn't rested or aged correctly. You'll often find that shincha tastes better after 4-6 months or refrigerated rest. If your interest in shincha is to celebrate the seasonality of sencha a la Beaujolais nouveau, that's great. If ...

Re: 2023 Shincha Harvest tea recommendations?

Hey everyone! With 2023 Japanese Shincha harvest coming in a couple of months - I wanted to check in with the tea community here on recommendations for Shincha, mainly what tea farms/producers should I be looking out for (apart from the big producers like Horii Shichimeien and Marukyu Koyamaen), an...

Re: Ode to the Kyusu

My first post, couldn't sleep so I decided to brew some gyokuro in my kyusu! I've been drinking Japanese greens for 1-2 years now (started during covid in 2020), but haven't had any new acquisitions in the past year or so until recently - got this from tokonameorjp, was a bit of an impulse buy! ./d...

Re: The Porcelain Thread

@GaoShan, here is a photo of my teapot from Inge and a detail of the ball filter.

The teapot is 150ml and pours at 30-40ml/sec according to my scale.

Re: The Porcelain Thread

GaoShan, ball filters are easier for novices to use and are usually a nuisance. The pot I have from her, with the all filter, is not at all a nuisance: it doesn’t take up unnecessary space, the holes are large enough that they are easy to clean, and the flow is amazing. Her teapot with the ball fil...
