Re: Ode to the Kyusu
Looks like that gorgeous little drip on the inside is a gift of the kiln ash spot? Maybe! I thought it might be an intentional drip of glaze given how localized it is and given its location on the interior. I interpreted as a drop made to echo the vertical brown stripes on the exterior. But I am no...

Re: Question on stockpiled clay
no, not what I meant, but it sounds like this is a different effect anyway. what I mean is when it looks almost as though you had removed a grain or two of sand or mineral from the clay once it was fired or while it was vitirfying, like a little pock mark Ah, now I understand what you meant, thanks...

Re: Question on stockpiled clay
2. In order to save time and costs, chemical additives are used to skip some labor intensive clay processing steps. For example, one issue that can come up in Yixing teapot production is that some salts can come to the surface (efflorescence), causing some marks that might not be aesthetically appe...

Re: Ode to the Kyusu
I recently acquired this vintage kyusu. I’m new to Japanese teaware, but after browsing for information I’m willing to guess this is Mashiko-yaki, styled after the work of Hamada Shoji, possibly mid-twentieth century. Some kind of ash glaze over iron-oxide painted decoration. I find it charmingly r...

Re: Question on stockpiled clay
http://www.zishaartgallery.com/product/%e5%a4%a7%e9%b1%bc%e5%8c%96%e9%be%99%e5%a3%b6-2/ It seems kind of ornate given the price as I would have expected it to cost more. It is all about how refined (and artistic, or historically significant) the teapot is. For example, compare the one you linked to...

Re: Question on stockpiled clay
Thanks for the great info! Regarding point two, someone had told me all modern yixing clay has additives, but I don't think that's true, correct? You are welcome! Correct, not all modern Yixing has additives. But the vast majority does, and I would have a very hard time believing that a clay does n...

Re: Question on stockpiled clay
This is a topic that comes up from time to time... - Some specific mines that were used have been mined out. However, there is still a large amount of Yixing clay from other mines. It is still possible to get Yixing clay that is as good as the old clay. - Weathering the clay more than a few years do...

Re: Pre factory yixing workshops/kilns/stores
Good to have a thread about this. We need to be careful though, some of the seals in the pics are replicas imo. The gong ju one for example, and some other ones probably as well. Thanks - added disclaimer Intention is not to provide seals validated by the gatekeepers- just info that I can find. Tha...

Re: Yixing
I thought I would post this one, that I've been told by the f1 expert is late 70s green label hong ni. I don't know much about this clay but it has a lot more spots than pre 77 hong ni. It is 90 mls and seems to do well with yancha - not much muting that I can detect - and is able to extract the fl...

Re: Yixing
Huh...hahaha this might actually be more complicated than i imagined! I just examined the lid seat again, seems more like reduction-fired spots, doesn't seem to have a coated layer I'm not really sure though haha, probably some blend? I guess i'll never know! Also, the seller stated he got it...

Re: Yixing
Could it be purple coated with red? The lid seat also seems to show streaks of purple, so it seems to come out in areas that are ground for lid fit. I think you are on the right track. Imo it is due to lack of oxygen in the interior during firing leading to reduction. This is then exposed in some a...
