Re: Origin of the tall yunomi

I always thought the Japanese had a particular knack for mix-matching the wares they use, no? As I understand it, Chinese ware was en vogue at some point, but expensive and difficult to get, so they matched it with locally made things. I might be wrong though. I think they definitely mixed what the...

Re: Origin of the tall yunomi

I see a kind of correlation between tall sobachoko and yunomi cup, similar to rice bowls and chawans. If the tall yunomi, like the chawan, takes its form from utilitarian tableware, does this betray a particularly japanese aesthetic preference (for simple, humble shapes) that may be at odds with a ...

Origin of the tall yunomi

Does anyone know the history behind the tall yunomi? The Japanese teacup that’s roughly twice as high as it is wide. As I understand it, infused tea (as opposed to whisked powdered tea) became popular in Japan with those who wanted to emulate Chinese literati culture and also to some extent in oppos...

Balthazar I did not claim it’s the only, or even the correct one, but as far as designed objects go, they have a valid experience to judge it’s harmonious visual composition, possibly more so than other more distant unrelated professionals like a doctor for example. You wouldn’t ask a painter on hi...

Re: Yixing

… you could have kept for yourself your poorly informed criticism of the calligraphy on my teapots (which I showed for a different purpose entirely) and you would have avoided a lesson. And this is what happens when people invest too much of their ego into a hobby. A small criticism against an inan...

Re: Yixing

I heard the argument that once you intentionally try to make something look "rough" or wabi sabi, you lose the spirit of true roughness. Based on this argument true roughness is simply born out of a haphazard way of doing things. I don’t think haphazard or unintentional is the right word, but I’m a...

Re: Mei leaf

It would be interesting for someone here to do a write up on ML’s teas compared to other vendors in a blind tasting. Yes, I think in general we are way too focused on brands and the faces of these brands. A lot of people approach buying tea in wierd way, they want to find brands to be fans of and o...

Re: Aged sheng - best of the cheap

I think you can look into further dividing the semi age Sheng by year gaps Yes, the teas I mentioned might not have a lot in common besides being (semi) aged and cheap, which still leaves room for plenty of variation, of course. If the list gets longer it would be a good idea to divide it further. ...

Aged sheng - best of the cheap

Hello everyone, although the advice to buy less but better quality is very sound I thought we might try to survey the cheap (semi) aged cakes on offer at the moment and see if we can determine which ones are a bargain and which ones aren’t. You know, for those moments when we want to stock up on dai...

Blends vs. Single Origin

Hello everyone, although the majority of puer and Japanese green tea sold today is still made up of blends, for some years now tea sellers have been offering more single cultivar/farm/mountain/tree(!) teas to the extent that it's possible to identify this as a trend or new direction of development. ...

Re: Tea in 18th century china as described in "Dream of the Red Chamber"

I have always been fascinated by the complex interplay between the concepts of real and fake in this novel The things you list are relevant but I think ultimately the real/fiction theme relates to a Buddhist idea about the illusory status of reality. So I think it’s less about corrupt authenticity ...

I remember longjing is also mentioned later on, volume 4 or 5 of the Hawkes/Minford translation.

There is also a paper - "Tea in The Story of The Stone: Meaning and Function" (easily found through google). Haven't got round to reading it though so I can't comment on it.

Hi,

is the pot still available?

It seems like I can't use the PM function yet. Maybe a mod can help with that. Thanks :)

Re: Dirt smell and taste in aged puer

Before you consider drinking it, look up the term "mycotoxicity". No matter what any tea blogger says on the matter, unless you know what kind of mold that is living on the tea, you should get rid of it even if its just a "little" moldy. Sure, to not consume anything that's not known to be harmless...
