The smooth part is the "surface" the rough part is "under the surface". All pots with a good fit are like that.

This is how they do it:

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

How is the pour? Any impression regarding the size? Lid fit and workmanship? I knew I had forgotten something important! The pour is 10 seconds and it is 140 ml in size. It doesn’t dribble at all. The lid fits absolutely perfectly. Out of all my pots, this lid fits the best. It barely budges once y...

My experience with yixing is very little, what is the line on the lid? It seems really smooth on the bottom edges and rough closer to the top. How is this effect created?
It looks as if the skirt of the lid was grinded at the rough part after a bisque firing to improve the lid fit.
Thanks!

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

I did the water test, pouring hot water over the top, and it performed admirably. The water formed nice droplet/trails over the surface, and it absorbed the water left on it fairly quickly. Smells good for a new teapot, sharp hot clay smell. The walls seem nice and thin, I don’t have a way of measur...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

I have just taken the plunge and bought one of their yixing, and when it arrives I will post a review for the benefit of our fair forum! Have you received your new teapot, swordofmytriumph? It should be here tomorrow! It has arrived at the regional distribution center and usually once that happens ...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking

The mail woman just dropped off my package of Dayuling from Eson! It is lovely. I was just about to go to bed but I couldn’t resist opening it and having a very small tasting. Gonna regret that when I try to fall asleep in a few min (the joys of graveyard shift, lol). Anyway. It is delicious. Lovely...

Re: Xiaguan BBQ Chicken recipe experiments

For tea paste/chagao it doesn't matter what you do. Just take a bunch of tea and start boiling away. Once you feel you've extracted enough, remove leaves. Wring them out, placing the reserve back in the pot and keep cooking. Stir as it gets thicker to prevent sticking. When it's ready pour out onto...

I'll give this a shot in a while. Do you have a recommended vendor for lapsang souchong?
Lol, actually, lapsang souchong is one of the few teas I don’t actually like. I’m sure that’s because I haven’t had any of the good stuff, I’m not really one to ask.

Re: Xiaguan BBQ Chicken recipe experiments

I'm wondering if you might have better results with a blend for your chicken. Perhaps try a puerh/lapsang souchong blend? Maybe two parts puerh and one part lapsang souchong, so the lapsang doesn't overwhelm the puerh flavors, but you get more smoke. Edit: Also, EarthMonkey , what is your recipe for...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

More often than not "Most X enthusiasts don't know the best X, because the best X is hard to get", irrespective of the value of X. Most wine enthusiasts never drink decades old top-quality wine. Most car enthusiasts never get to drive an F1. Whether due to lack of contacts or, more often than not, ...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

I've found that a lot of tea enthusiasts don't know what good tea tastes like because good teas are difficult to get. From what I understand there is a scale, and many of the vendors we frequent here tend to be on the “very good, occasionally amazing, but not spectacular” rung of the tea ladder. Wo...

I have safely saved your recommendations to a list I have created to keep track.
I have a similar list myself created from all the other people’s recommendations. I still haven’t had the opportunity to buy from all the companies on my list.

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

for Japanese tea I like Thes Du Japon, and O-Cha. For Pu’erh Yunnan Sourcing and Crimson Lotus. +1 for all these (have not yet tried Kettl and Maiko). I also like Yunnan Sourcing’s black teas, especially their golden bud type teas. I’ll add to that list: Taiwan tea crafts—gaoshan and taiwanese blac...
