Re: Filipino tea culture?

Kind of slow to be checking in on this. One of my earliest online tea contacts was a woman in the Philippines who was into better tea. It was too early; others just weren't on that page. Later I talked regularly with one of the main vendors promoting specialty tea there (the Teavolution founder, if...

Re: Filipino tea culture?

Filipino here. And, the tea culture here is mostly reserved for the Filipino-Chinese community. The tea houses shown in this thread are not really "tea houses". They just give you service tea (most likely a cheap black, a cheap watery jasmine green or a cheap shou). Those "tea houses" forte are real...

Re: Kyoto in autumn

I went to the ceramic street on my first visit, but it was just more of what you find elsewhere, just stacked upon each other. Prices are the same? How did you like Osaka? For me it was a city to avoid, the equivalent of Kaohsiung in Taiwan: ugly, nothing of interest, vast and full of people... and...

Re: Kyoto in autumn

I was in Osaka and Kyoto last week. I agree with how expensive the city is (food and tea-wise). Although, I enjoyed going to Ippodo and drinking some sencha and gyokuro first thing in the morning. My wife, who likes umami profiles very much, pretty much enjoyed drinking tea in Japan. The other thing...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

Someone correct if I am wrong, but I think that later factory heini is actually achieved by additives to the clay, not reduction firing. Underlying base should be Zini. I would stay away from late F1 black (also green and blue) teapots. Thanks for the heads up! Good thing I asked before I bought it...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

I hear you faj I bump into the yixing and other specialty pots too often! So far I’ve held back I am afraid I am not quite as strong-willed as you are... ;) This being said, I am eying Japanese teapots, as was suggested earlier in the thread, as it seems to be less obscure. Willpower can only do so...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

There's no Heini, any clay can be Heini, if reduction fired. The base clay defines what tea would be good for it. Cool. So, Heini can be anything then? That'll be more confusing then. I'm asking because I have my eyes on a pot from 2088Taiwan. Would you be able to distinguish the base clay used for...

Re: Puzzled wannabe Yixing buyer

Speaking of Heini, I'm quite intrigued by it actually. What clay are they using? What teas are suggested for it? How does it affect the brew?

Re: Japanese Green Tea: Aged, Roasted, Fermented

Maybe storing them in caddies that allow the teas to breath hidden in relatively cool places, like was the case in the olden days with pottery jars in kura storehouses, makes for a more balanced aging compared to freezer storing. Has anybody made a comparison original leaf vs. the same aged in a fr...

We may have our first “homegrown” teapot hype-hysteria
To completely honest, I bought a Kobiwako because of your posts.

I drink a lot of high mountain oolong and you said Kobiwako is good for that. Hence, it made sense for me to buy one. :D

Re: Hokujo, Kobiwako & Iga Clay

I have been reading a lot about how Kobiwako is a "magic clay" and 3 weeks ago, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one from Hojo. I ordered a 110ml kyusu with a sasame filter... I had been eyeing that particular one for a while because of the sesame filter. It's a shame you are having such g...

I have been reading a lot about how Kobiwako is a "magic clay" and 3 weeks ago, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one from Hojo. I ordered a 110ml kyusu with a sasame filter. I got it after 5 days and I decided to see what it's all about. Having no gaoshan at hand, I first started with what ...

Re: What HeiCha are you drinking

A very important Mainland Chinese business partner who particularly loves heicha paid me a visit a few hours ago. I brought out the good stuff and served him some 2002 Aged Wild Liu Bao Tea "803" from Yunnan Sourcing. I brewed it in a Nixing pot and damn that tea brewed like forever. I probably used...
