Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Some age into expressing more root beer attributes. Some end up being a blend both. Root beer is definitely my fav. must know which ones. :) root beer is my fav. haven't come across a puer that I'd say resembles root beer. I would be the first to say if you want to drink root beer drink root beer, ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

what does XG stand for? Xiaguan Tea Factory, the vaunted Factory #3, most famous for their tuo and iron cakes. Half their production is state controlled for distribution to Tibet. There's a flame mushroom-shaped tuo that is quite popular. They're in the Dali area. Their Gold Ribbon 100g tuo product...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Since I've been tasting a while, I've seen how some productions have appreciated. I've missed buying some when they were cheap, other's not. The price of a production is timing. It often takes a very long time for a production to "bloom." Nobody really knows. It's a moving target. The factories are ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

However, if I find something that blows me away, two things are gonna happen. I'm gonna buy it all, and you aren't gonna ever hear about it. :) Probably not. I'll probably place my order for more and then tell everyone about a tea that blew me away. And as you say I think we agree, the tea may not ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Western collectors constitute a much more insular circle of drinkers than in the Chinese world and those who have access to it. As such then, it (the Western puerh scene) is a community where a fairly small subset of productions even enter the radar. Most of those hardly figure from the Chinese pers...

Unfortunately, with internet tea, price is the most obvious metric for value.
How have you arrived at this conclusion, if you don't mind my asking? What is an internet tea in contrast to a non-internet tea. I'm not familiar with these categories.

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

You need to drink and drink and drink. Then drink and drink some more. Try to get less caught up on the price of the tea. Price in puerh is like price in wine. It's the exact same. There are some v. good Bulgarian and California wines that will NEVER reach the price point of such and such French win...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Thanks for sharing EarthMonkey, some very good insight. I thought you’ve been storing Puerh since late ‘90s early ‘00 since you have such a large collection? I regarded puer more as a folk specialty than a speculative item in the early 90s. I had mostly ripe and wasn't remotely impressed. It's only...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

"Stupid mainlander" isn't meant to be taken wrong. If that was not your intention, then it's really unnecessary to propagate a stereotype. Saying "I'm not XYZ-ist but ..." is still XYZ-ist. I'm not aware of any stereotype. As I implied, it's more a matter of the new rich than anything else. Having ...

Re: Buying Pu'erh for the long haul

Seems you've set a project for yourself. What a thorough post. It sounds like you're a tea speculator. You have to understand that if you're seeking to speculate that you must purchase productions that are highly regarded or have the potential to be highly regarded in future. You must recognize that...

Re: Xiaguan BBQ Chicken recipe experiments

I have some higher grade pieces that you can hit me up for if interested. Still not understanding your ratio EarthMonkey. You said “about two to one ripe to raw” what is the Yabao ratio? 2 Ripe : 1 Raw : ? Yabao I added the Yabao with the raw in making the approximation, as it contains some raw mat...

Re: Xiaguan BBQ Chicken recipe experiments

Thanks this helps a lot! A couple follow up questions, it’s just tea and water only? Will this work with any type of tea? Also, do you find that the tea gets bitter or loses anything from all the boiling? I only know of puerh chagao, though I have no reason to believe that the same process would no...
