Re: SHINCHA 2019!

Asanoka asamushi from O-Cha. 15.30 USD per 100 grams. I had Asanoka last harvest from O-Cha, but this year's is a completely different experience. Last year's was a rather ... hmmm ... extreme example ... extremely assertive to the point I found myself using it for blending. But I enjoyed it and reo...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

My overall impression of the rare yet very affordable Kirari 31 from O-Cha. We really flew through the 100 grams. Dry leaf aroma might be the number 1 memorable feature of this selection. Incredible! I could literally smell the intoxicating aroma a few meters away. Price point of $14.40 makes the se...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

New tea day! Kirari 31 asamushi. A cultivar I have not tried before. VERRRRY aromatic dry leaves are captivating ... can this be this good at only $14.40 per 100 grams??? Answer, yes. Might be the best I have had at this price point. Very flavorful, deep mouth feel, lots of umami, very low astringen...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

plus 3 more bags of 20th Anniversary. You must really be enjoying that one, Chip! I have a bag that I ordered but have not opened yet. I have been under the weather so I don't want to venture into it without all of my senses being at their best. Hope you get well soon! This one is just so easy to b...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

Kevin also informed me that Miyabi is very good this year. It has been over at least 12 years since I purchased Miyabi from O-Cha, just did not wow me back then. Quite intensely grassy. Seemed one dimensional to me, but maybe I was either not ready for it yet or was not brewing it quite right. But K...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

These 2 new shincha were both recommended by Kevin, but I would have selected them anyway.

Kirari 31 is a rare SM hybrid that is also an affordable alternative.

Asanoka was interesting to me last year, and this a better selection ... and also an affordable selection.

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

After a few days of Ippodo shincha, I am ready to move on. Then this arrived today from O-Cha. 3 new choices plus 3 more bags of 20th Anniversary. I decided to open the Madoka YM first. Definitely feeling the caffeine buzz right now. 20190531_161726.jpg 20190531_161803.jpg First steep: 20190531_1619...

Re: Hohin vs. Shiboridashi for Gyokuro

I definitely favor houhin (however you want to spell it) over shib for brewing gyokuro. I have collected houhin for a little over 10 years, and my experience is dominated by their use for brewing gyokuro. Shibs, pretty recently I purchased 3 Hokujo, and tbh, have limited experience using them. 1. Ea...

Like that you are mixing it up Chip. How do you find this year’s Yutaka Midori?
I am favoring O-Cha's YM at this point over standard SM. And I think it is better this year than last.

... and it is with great pleasure we embark on bag 2 of 20th Anniversary SM.

Testing new limits on leaf to water ratio. Just a touch more leaf and it transports us to a higher love.

This tea just somehow seems musical ...

Re: SHINCHA 2019!

Been doing some ... unorthodox blending. I think the Aoi by Tsuen via O-Cha gets better with time ... it is a bit edgy, especially this early on. Seems this way most years but it remains a perennial asamushi fave of ours. I had fuka YM, standard fuka SM, and asa Aoi open at the same time. So most da...

The survival of the hagis, lol. You know you're into teaware when you're perfectly fine with your cup leaking a bit and cracking and consider that not only normal, but part of the charm. I have not mentioned it to my family. They would not understand.   I used a biwa chawan from Sei...

Re: Hagi

My one biwa, from a tea chat offering, was a leaker out of the box! Quickly plugged with the corn starch trick it was in heavy rotation for a couple years. It always had a ringing brittleness, hollow. Unsound, like it’s owner. One day it it dissolved in my hand during the rinse after a cup. And no ...

Re: Do you prefer light, medium, or deep steamed sencha?

Yes! If I have a bag of asa open, I will be craving fuka and vice versa. So right now since we have been drinking 3 different bags of fuka shicha, I am definitely craving asa ... and with that ... Aoi just arrived! But I guess if I am being honest with myself, fuka has the highest "crave f...

Re: Kobiwako clay kyusu, current generation (Chip)

210 ml is sold. Two remain, 230 ml and 260 ml. It is shincha-time! Perfect time to get a great clay for brewing sencha. I just brewed the O-Cha 20th anniversary Sae Midori. The direct wall screen pour was flawless and the liquor was mesmerizing! I also brewed this with a Gisui direct wall screen kyu...
