Re: Mystery chawan!
Hello. I asked a Karatsu ceramics guide if they know of this chawan artist. She told me this is a Ido-Chawan style made in Tottori Prefecture. Base on his chop and signage, the name of this potter is Nagai Kanrian, of the the kiln Chisoku-gama. He passed away last year. I am not sure how you can fu...

Re: Care of matchawares
Thank you for the tips. Wondering now if a fine pastry brush might serve to gently really clean a chasen....of course, one only used for the chasen and never for floury pastry! Maybe! You'd want to be very sure you weren't abrading the tines at all, however, as they can get awfully delicate with ag...
Re: Raku
Fuut (and everyone), your posts about Raku are wonderful. Please keep sharing as much as you like! I have a question about Raku that perhaps you can answer. I know that traditionally Raku glaze contained (and leeched) lead. Are contemporary potters still adding lead to their glazes? I have heard of...

Re: Care of matchawares
Towards the end of a Japanese tea ceremony, the host fills the chawan with cold water and whisks the chasen in that. The cold water re-strengthens the tines so that they're less prone to breakage. (Also, the guests can now enjoy hearing what whisking with cold water sounds like -- it's higher-pitche...

Re: Does teacup size matter?
The size, shape and thickness of the cup definitely have an effect on taste and aroma. (I suspect that the ability of a vessel to shape a tea's aroma is why we have such a different experience with "taste".) It's fun sometimes to brew a tea, pour it into 3 or 4 different vessels, and taste for yours...

Re: Trusting Oneself & One's Tea
I really love this post and discussion. I used to obsessively collect teas of all kinds. At the beginning it was purely exploratory. Later it became a quest to find "the best" tea: the best matcha, the best gyokuro, the best sencha, yadda yadda. And then (as others have observed above), I discovered...

Mystery chawan!
Hello all, I bought this chawan a few years ago from someone who couldn't read Japanese. (Neither can I.) At the time it was identified - erroneously, I'm pretty sure - as Karatsu. I've tried to find someone who can help identify the maker from the following photos, but so far without luck. If anyon...

Re: Introduce Yourself
More than a few years ago. So very nice to see you once again! And I could not agree more about your above assessment. Tea not only seems to lend itself to a more quiet and relaxed moment during our otherwise busy day ... it commands it ... lest we miss its beauty. Thank you for the kind ...

Re: Introduce Yourself
Hello all! My name is chamekke and I have a tea addiction. I used to be active on TeaChat a few years back, and only just discovered that Chip and some other folks became active here in January. So, lovely to make your acquaintance -- or to see you again, as the case may be :) How long have you been...
