Re: Inaugural Group Tasting: Sinensis Yokkaichi & Ippodo Tokusen Gyokuro
Great discussion. Like Bok I generally prefer Yancha over Gyokuro but this is an awesome treat and nice change of pace for me. It offers a thickness and texture that is pretty unique, not to mention umami goodness. Tea of this quality is an indulgence and education so I pretty much throw normal cons...

Re: Inaugural Group Tasting: Sinensis Yokkaichi & Ippodo Tokusen Gyokuro
Oh yes, great idea about eating the tender leaves. I like to fry them in a fryer (no oil), slowly on low heat to remove moisture, swirling around while heating, and then add some herbs and spices like kelp, roasted sesame seeds, kombu, etc. This is nice sprinkled over eggs, rice, potatoes, roasted ...

Re: Inaugural Group Tasting: Sinensis Yokkaichi & Ippodo Tokusen Gyokuro
I did an overnight cold water steep that came out delicious. Sweet, light, refreshing. Perfect wake up before morning meditation. Of course, it did not have the rich umami, oily thickness in the mouth and throat. But was light a Spring morning with a bit of oomph at the bottom of the cup. I may eat ...

Re: Inaugural Group Tasting: Sinensis Yokkaichi & Ippodo Tokusen Gyokuro
First session with the Sinensis today, paired with John Coltrane "Blue World". Used TJ Olancha water (105tds), Ruyao pancake teapot at prescribed ratio and temp. Love the rich dry leaf odor, especially when in the warmed pot. 1st steep "Naima" thick and oily butter that coats the mouth and throat. S...

Re: Inaugural Group Tasting: Sinensis Yokkaichi & Ippodo Tokusen Gyokuro
Let the fun and joy begin. Opening the bags to breathe a few minutes my first impression is that they both smell heavenly. The Sinensis seemed to have a deeper more robust smell, where the Ippodo was higher frequency aroma and possibly smaller leaves. I didn't pour leaves out to examine them and per...

Re: High fire TGY suggestions?
I really enjoy Fang Tea's Anxi TGY. Richand well balanced. They use to offer 30% and 50% roasts but looks like they may be sold out of the higher roast now. I hot it hard and prefer the 30% for myself. I expect the 50% will age real well. Will advise on that down the road. https://www.fangtea.com/pr...

Re: Favorite YQH tea (in relation to price)
A great bargain tea is the 07 Jincha. Its pretty compressed which can be challenging but wonderful tea at $95 for a 300g tuo. Another would be 2006 Qixiang at $305 for a 500g cake. It's a Six Famous Tea Mountain blend so sessions can vary a bit but it has wonderful qi and ranges from good to great f...

Re: Interest check: Ippodo's Tokusen Gyokuro, Premium grade only sold at Kyoto Main Store
A higher ratio of leaf:water ratio is common with gyokuro, with Ippodo typically 10 grams leaf: 80ml water. Great info. I haven't bought any since I got into drinking sheng and using a scale. Always eyeballed it. For premium grade, limited access tea like this I'll want to make sure I get the most ...

Re: Introduce Yourself
Hello, I am Pete and live in San Diego. My mother was British so I've been drinking tea a long time ;) These days I mainly drink Chinese tea these days and sheng is a staple. I also enjoy aged oolongs , yancha and Taiwanese oolong. I drank Japanese green tea a long while but don't buy it much these ...
