Re: What Black Are You Drinking
I am under the impression that a lot of Earl Greys are based on tea from India rather than China. Thus, finding one based on Keemun is interesting. Since you mentioned broken leaf, I presume you got their loose leaf tea rather than the tea bags. I might need to try Taylors.

Re: Lapsang Souchong
Here in the States you can often find water quality parameters for local water systems posted online. I do not know if that is the case where you live. TDS meters are not all that expensive as they only thing they do is measure the conductivity of the water. Since you are in Canada, check out some o...

Re: Water Water Everywhere... What’s Your Water?
Although my tap water is safe to drink, it is so hard (18-28 grains of hardness) that I use a ion exchange water softener. Since that produces water that is very soft, but has a high sodium level. I do not like using it for drinking as I have high-blood pressure and that is aggravated by excess sodi...

Re: Water Water Everywhere... What’s Your Water?
Unfortunately, the drinking water in my community is horrible. It is extremely hard (19-29 grains hardness per gallon) and the water is treated with chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia. The water does not taste good without further treatment I use a water softener to remove the calcium...

Re: Keeping lid on between steeps
I usually try to brew the first infusion at the recommended temperature and time for the specific tea I am drinking. After that, I sometimes experiment with higher or lower temperatures and shorter or longer steeping times depending upon my experience with the first steep. I normally steep 4 -5 gram...

Re: Doped Teas - An Open Secret?
I made the mistake of purchasing Harney and Sons Pomegranate Oolong tea from a local grocery store. Harney and Sons has been around for nearly 4 decades. This specific tea has 359 reviews on the Harney web site, all but a few being 5-star. The tea is supposed to be Tie Guan Yin oolong with natural p...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking
This morning I brewed a pot (three infusions) of Da Hong Pao from Best Leaf Tea. They list it as a premium tea, but this is my first experience with Red Robe, so I do not know how it compares with other versions. I did enjoy the tasting experience. It was still full of flavor on the third infusion. ...

Re: What Oolong Are You Drinking
I have large hands, fat fingers and arthritic joints. I find it impossible to handle a gaiwan without burning my fingers. I do like the concept of brewing small quantities with multiple steepings and then combining the brews in a fairness pitcher. Thus, a small porcelain pot with a handle works well...

Re: Where do yellow teas (Huang Cha) fit
I did a search for "yellow tea" and came up with a number of threads that reference yellow such as yellow labels, but there was nothing about Huang Cha yellow teas. Perhaps, they are so rare in most parts of the world that it is not worth discussing them.

Where do yellow teas (Huang Cha) fit
In an effort to explore a wide variety of tea types, I have purchased a couple of yellow teas (Huang Cha). There does not seem to be an ideal place to discuss these teas. They share some similarities with green, white and black teas in the way they are grown, picked, and processed, but yellow teas d...

Re: Ode to the Kyusu
I do not have a Kyusu, but perhaps there should be one in my future. I have very sensitive fingertips, so using a Chinese style gaiwan usually results in burned fingers. I like the handle design the Kyusu.

Re: Tea commercials
Yes, many advertisements certainly stress image. Perhaps one of the most classic is the Marlboro man, implanting the image that if men smoked Marlboro cigarettes that they would be perceived as rugged, handsome individuals, presumably attractive to the opposite sex. I am glad such cigarette advertis...

Re: Tea commercials
I despise iced tea made from instant tea. It may even be nastier than instant coffee, which I also despise. The thing that amazes me is that there are even some nice restaurants that serve instant iced tea, spoiling what otherwise might have been a pleasant dining experience. At one time I had one o...
