Re: A Chinatown find?
This shape should belongs to one kind of 具輪珠, a classical shape which the Japanese preferred in Qing dynasty. From Qing dynasty, the Japanese ordered and imported a lot of Yixing pots. Of course this one is modern, the artist name looks like 郭建平.

Re: How does a westerner learn yixing?
Thank you very much for that generous offer, and the help you give here and on your facebook group :) The real tea scene, as i know from K.L., Malaysia, in particular is not on the web, but in person. Sitting together, exchanging views and knowledge, all while drinking tea. Unfortunately this is no...

How to identify the clay of 60s and 70s ?
In 60s and 70s, basically there is only Yixing Factory 1 (Factory 2 initiated in 1980) and no any individual pot artist, it is easy to understand the clay of that era. But in the market, some vendors always like to confuse us, try to make the fakes as authentic. 1.The clay of 1960s and 70s was well ...

Re: How does a westerner learn yixing?
I agree to learn Yixing pots by photos is difficult, but there are still some features can help us to identify it. For example, the seal, workmanship and shape (mold). Of course, there are so many fakes in the market, it take times to learn all the knowledge about it. I think post your pots in here ...

Re: About the clay in Yixing today
The vendor suggests a strong colour indicates concentrations >= 5PPM. I'd have to have a look around, but you may well be right about that being too high a standard (or higher than the EPA standards for drinking water, at least) although I believe you could account for this somewhat by, say, fillin...

Re: About the clay in Yixing today
Thanks Dr Lu! I imagine it wouldn't be worth it for cheap pots, but at $11 it seems that something like THIS might be a good idea if someone has any concerns. Wow, this looks good. How about the sensitivity of it ? Because the metal-ion dissolved should be very little, if the sensitivity is not hig...

Re: About the clay in Yixing today
Welcome Dr Lu, and thank you for sharing your experience! I smell a very strange odor from some modern purple clay pots that are sold with signed certificates and all. I don't buy any odd colored clays but even the purple clay appears to be an issue in many cases now. Thank you. Most of the...

Re: About the clay in Yixing today
Hi, Not all pots use toxic oxides have a strange smell, it's just one of the indication. The color and appearance of pot are the other indications. Of course if we want to 100% sure, the scientific test is best. The following link is the program of Chinese CCTV, it's in Chinese, but in the film we c...

Re: About the clay in Yixing today
The major problem of some clay today, is the adding of oxide. Actually before 80s, only few special color had add oxide, but after mid-80s oxide was more commonly added in Yixing. Adding oxide doesn't mean the pot is toxic, it depends on what kind of oxide and the temperature of firing. But in recen...
