Re: Green Tea Vendor Topic

TdJ don't have to pay extra for foreign customers paying in yen though.... that's not how paypal or banking works in the vast majority of the world. Whatever nonsense China does isn't relevant and after condescendingly telling us all we just don't understand how things work @aet then said "I don't k...

Re: Green Tea Vendor Topic

Well all I can say is it would show up in JPY on my credit card statement....(and I don't use paypal for currency conversion because their rates are poo). I don't mind if they don't want to deal with USD but they're the ones enforcing no JPY.... "The currency you're paying in isn't actually the curr...

Re: Green Tea Vendor Topic

As far as I can see they're using a self hosted program not a SaaS platform so "oops, this was forced on us" is a bit dubious, but even giving them the benefit of the doubt there they'd still have control over the currency conversion rate. Can we even call a 55% premium an exchange rate? If they did...

Re: Green Tea Vendor Topic

Yeah...a 50% gaijin tax is just taking the piss. I'd say use a forwarding service except if someone is going to treat you like that it makes more sense not to do business with them at all.

Re: Ode to the Kyusu

I have been working on deciphering the chop from this Kyusu with not much success. So far, I have found a few similar style ones on Asian auction sites with this name: 梅原光山. Anyone recognizes this chop or know who made this Kyusu? The carving seems quite good. ./download/file.php?id=14554 ./downloa...

Re: 2023 Shincha Harvest tea recommendations?

I've not looked at Yuuki-Cha. I've been waiting for Thes Du Japon inventory but they still have no Gyokuro. They did get some more sencha options today or yesterday though, and I'm interested in their Shincha options. Sazen, Hibiki an or O-cha doesn't have any Gyokuro either. Is Gyokuro something t...

Re: 2023 Shincha Harvest tea recommendations?

Welp... After waiting a bit and looking around I ended up pulling the trigger on a few items from Yuuki-Cha (who are offering 13 items at posting). I didn't really have anything particular in mind this year, and it's been quite some time since I've thrown some business their way, so I figured, "Why...

Re: Visiting Tokoname (2017)

It's certainly highly variable but out of the smaller stores I've wanted to visit in Japan the mostly common day for closures actually seemed to be Wednesday although there was still tons of shopping to be had.

Re: Visiting Tokoname (2017)

You'll have no problem finding teapots to buy. There are lots of stores in and around the pottery trail area and then even if Isobe isn't repaired and reopened by the time you go they weren't the only large shop out in that ceramall complex, just one with extremely nice people.

Shim under the tray so the tilt counteracts the pot's tipsiness ;)

Re: Kyusu advice

Sample size of one but my(rather larger) Setsudo is perfect in terms of handling and finish. I wouldn't really have concerns about the Umehara one either those "craftsman" pots seem to always be a fair bet, really I have more faith in the consistent quality of many ~$100 pots than I do many of the m...

And now for something completely different. A teapot with a ceramic filter basket by Yusen I. Over on Thes du Japan Florent has written Throughout his career, Yûsen the First experimented a lot with teapot filters. He even had the idea of a pottery basket in the same style as the stainless-steel one...

Re: Help id'ing this tea pot?

Hello. I bought this teapot at an antique store in Abilene, KS and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a) identify the mark and b) translate the poem (which may not actually be Japanese). Honestly, I'm not even sure if this is a Japanese pot or a Chinese knock-off. It does appear to be thrown ...

Thes-du-japon also nitro flushes. They switched over about a year ago? Maybe longer, time slips by these days. Sorry for pinging an old post but how do you know he nitro flushes? I honestly thought he'd stated as much a bit after he made the change over, although I'm finding it on his blog maybe it...

Unable to find the exact location of your Mr Nakamura but he does also do business with Marumatsu Teahouse http://www.marumatsu-tea.co.jp/en/growers/#nakamura , although oddly enough their online shop goes all in on deep steamed tea and I haven't even found gyokuro or anything from him so all there ...
