Re: Yixing

I ask one question about whether well-made lids should be perfectly level and get chastised for being too picky—in a world where folks happily debate the aesthetic merits of pouring and brushing water over pots to achieve an even patina. :) Regarding pouring over teapots to warm them: isn’t this a n...

Re: Yixing

Of course it's not perfect, it is handmade. All hand made things have small subtle "faults". If you are chasing after perfection, then it's really easy to fall into the trap of buying a 300 yuan machine made pot, sold for 10x the price. Also, as noted above, while not expecting perfection I assume ...

Re: Yixing

Aren’t you a perfectionist? I think we have to accept the imperfection of a handmade item that they will never be perfectly symmetrical and straight like its machine made counterpart. Perhaps the flat surface the potter used was not perfectly flat? I don't know...let's wait for the experts. I...

Re: Yixing

Looking at yet another pot from a reputable maker and vendor. How much unevenness/irregularity is normal or acceptable in the flat surfaces of a fully handmade teapot? I just happened to notice that the bottom edge of the lid’s internal rim is not absolutely level. One would never notice unless told...

Shouldn't be that fast... do you remember it being that shiny before?
Not sure to be honest. Also, could be the light. I’m holding it right by the window in these photos.

Re: Yixing

Clay looks very shiny for a new pot, but I am told newer Yixing is more shiny? Clay colour and grain looks very similar to what I am used to see in low-fired Zini from antiques, but I guess that can't be a low fired pot? Not sure about the firing temperature. I did season/boil it, so maybe it is a ...

Re: Yixing

Global tea hut and chanting pines sell them. This maker became popular I think partly due to the amazing marketing skills of GTH  . Craftsmanship and clay quality are great--I'm happy with most of my pots. Some I like less because it doesn't pour as well as I like, but I think it's a subjectiv...

Re: Yixing

Sounds like a popular potter, mind sharing where you two got your pots from? The maker is Chen Ju Fang, wife of Master Zhou, from Wuxing Shan Fang studio. I am 100% confident in the provenance. However, it is hard for me to confirm certain qualities on my own. For example, it is supposed to be full...

Re: Yixing

Hmm. Should I think it odd nobody wants to offer an opinion? Yes, I am the user—but I trust others are much more experienced. Based on the images, the craftsmanship looks excellent. However, the ergonomics of the pot is part of the craftsmanship, and that's difficult to tell without seeing the pot ...

Re: Yixing

Pictures don’t tell much in my opinion. Really? Can’t confirm full vs. half handmade? Quality of workmanship? Quality of clay? With modern pot, it’s hard to tell full vs. half handmade. By the pictures, it seems it’s not made by machine, and it’s not slipcast. Workmanship using modern pot judgement...

Do you enjoy using it? Does it pour well? Enough room for tea to expand, etc.? The user will always be the best judge, no?

Re: Yixing

Pictures don’t tell much in my opinion. If you have a pot that can be seasoned in 2 sessions, it’s a concern. I think most people would think how, and boiling is one method I boiled the pot for an hour and used it twice after. What’s wrong with boiling the pot to season it? Thought that was fairly ...
