Re: Yixing

The plot thickens. I have observed that two different seals are associated with Xu Yue Feng’s studio. Gleaning from Chinese websites as best I can, one seal seems to be more prevalent on considerably less expensive pots. Is it possible it denotes apprentice work? For reference, Master Xu’s name in C...

Re: Yixing

I believe Xu Yuefeng called this particular batch of clay "金黄朱泥" At least 金黄朱泥 is actually a real type of ore, unlike Da Hong Pao. However 黄金朱泥 should be from Zhaozhuang. To his and maybe others’ credit, I don’t think it is being held out as a distinct ore. Master Xu is quite explicit that his “Da ...

Re: Yixing

So, this is what Xu Yue Feng tells me about the “Da Hong Pao” clay used in his teapots, via Gao/Yinchen: 20+ years ago, Master Xu experimented with sorting out the highest grades of each main variety of zhuni (Zhao Zhuang, Xiao Mei Yao, and Huang Long Shan). He found that the refined HLS was the be...

Re: Yixing

Maybe they said that, because HLS zhuni is the most "common" one? It's the least red of all zhuni and it has the smallest shrinkage of all Zhuni too. XMY is the most naturally red kind of zhuni, and it has the highest shrinkage of all types of zhuni. The original Zhuni is however, Zhaozhuang zhuni....

Re: Yixing

If he'd claim XMY or Zhaozhuang zhuni, then I'd be more surprised. So yes, I'd say HLS zhuni is in a humanly reachable price category. Youzi do you specifically mean DHP or all Zhuni? I pretty sure most of yinchen’s zhuni claimed to xmy and zz, and m&l also used xmy zhuni. Also, I had read from var...

Re: Yixing

mafoofan I also found the same to be true. A reputable non ranked studio's top stuff (which is usually some kind of HLS clay) is usually going for 3000-5000 rmb. The starting price for 原矿 full had teapots with nice clay start at 1000 rmb the lowest. You can get "deals" on master pots, if you look o...

Re: Yixing

That seems a bit cheap for a master pot made of top material, doesn't it? He is not a certified master. Then we’d be talking about a price in the thousands. Based on what I’ve seen, $500-700 USD is the rough price range for a teapot fully handmade out of good clay by a non-ranked but experienced, w...

Re: Yixing

mafoofan I think he or another artist was the one, who pioneered the whole DHP thing like 10 years ago? Not sure, just I seem to have heard that name before. Where are you buying from him? I'd be interested in seeing his ZZ and XMY stuff. :D Steanze has a number of his pots, at least some of which ...

Re: Yixing

mafoofan DHP is a modern "creation", to imitate old Da Hong Ni/ Da Hong Pao + antique zhuni with deep red colors. If it's real, then it's basically just a better selection of Zhuni ore. To comment on the lid: I can see that "fault" now. I'd say, if you paid more than $2000 for it, then you should m...

Re: Yixing

Thanks, Youzi. I am getting clarification on the clay from Master Xu. The original description was that he “refined” it from 20+ year old zhuni sourced from Huang Long mountain. That would lead me to believe he handpicked the best stuff from his stash of zhuni ore—but who knows. I thought zhuni did...

Re: Yixing

Another teapot! Ordered this one from Xu Yue Feng. I am told it is 20+ year old Da Hong Pao clay from Huanglong mountain, “refined” from zhuni ore by Master Xu himself. Does that make sense? I was under the impression that Da Hong Pao from Huanglongshan was extinct and also a different clay from zhu...

Clay and craftsmanship look good on this pot.
Even though the lid is poised to seesaw into oblivion?

Re: Yixing

mafoofan Your pot looks really nice. :D What fault are you talking about? I can't see it. How's the natural patina development going on it? There is a subtle “uplift” in the bottom rim of the lid. It is front and center in the photo above. Then I realized it’s more obvious when the uplift is orient...
